I’ve been coming to a conclusion about how we’ve designed our lives that is rather scary - we’re returning to serfs and masters as a model of economics.

Sounds leftist… I know.

Yet here we see, in the commercial real estate market, exactly that. What you described has happened everywhere. In the San Diego region, where housing is higher than in many places, over the last few decades but especially since around the end of the last bubble we’ve seen large real estate holding/managing companies becoming the standard, and the small time land-lord slipping away. The large commercial companies only care about a % return/yr, and really don’t have a connection to the property they own or the people who inhabit the property.

To some it may sound leftist but egalitarianism isn’t a leftist concept. Fairness, an equitable playing field. It is a fact that we have strayed far from even respecting the idea of fairness. Too many people have become complacent in accepting a status quo that doesn’t even work for them but are afraid to speak up because they want to be part of the group.
