Tech Note: New Tweet Button

LGF • Views: 4,188

Twitter recently launched a new Tweet Button feature, and I’m trying it out today at LGF. As you can see, it includes a count of the number of times the link to the article has been posted at Twitter.

I’m letting you know this because I need to test what happens when I post a new article; will the Twitter API automatically shorten the article’s URL with Twitter’s t.co service?

UPDATE at 10/9/10 5:48:32 pm:

Well, Twitter is apparently going to start auto-shortening links inside API-posted tweets any day now, but they’re not doing it yet.

Yes, it works when you post it through the new Tweet Button. I meant when I first post the article with my LGF Blog software, which is registered as a Twitter app to use their API. It doesn't appear to automatically shorten links posted that way.

I had a Tweet oddity yesterday. I tried to tweet this Page, and Twitter couldn't do more than "Ju", apparently stopped by the accented u. I changed it to an unaccented u and it went through. Stuck on html?

Hmm. There's some funny business going on with the way Twitter handles HTML character entities. Because of little weirdnesses like that, I usually try to keep accented characters out of my article titles.

re: #6 Charles

Yeah, I'll use the unaccented version for titles, and also for tags, to keep it simple. Even local newspaper websites aren't set up to handle accents and tildes. You'd think it was a foreign language.

Who's trying to overthrow the Empire of Man tonight?

I'm going to be trying to make it through a 4 hour and 45 minute shift tonight with a bruised left knee.

Over the last two days, my body has been trying to fight a cold coming on, my ears have been blocked and stomach upset. Last night, I come home, take a night time cold tablet, go to bed, about 45 minutes later, get up to get a drink of water, and walking back to the bedroom, I fainted.

Busted the left knee a bit, seems like nothing is broken and pulled, just a good smack to it. I actually went back to the bedroom, sat on the edge of the bed, and passed out again, hit the floor with my head. That didn't hurt anything.

But knee is sore,,, and I have almost 5 hours on my feet tonight, should be interesting.

P.S. Head cold, or what was trying to to become a head cold, all gone.

Virginia Tea Party Patriots Convention: Chris Christie Wins the Straw Poll

The surprise winner of the 2012 straw poll at the Virginia Tea Patriots Convention -- announced by a literal drum roll -- is Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.). He won 14% of the vote in a 15-way ballot, beating Sarah Palin (13.5%), Ron Paul (12.5%), Newt Gingrich (8.4%), and Jim DeMint (7.3%), in a poll of 1,560 attendees -- at least twice as large as the news-making Values Voter straw poll, if I'm remembering correctly.

Trying to get people together for a game of Arkham horror.

My first one went pretty well, when we decided to break it down for time reasons, Hasture was at 8 doom tokens, with the terror track at two, no monsters on the board and two sealed gates.

With only a minus 2 per attack we probably could have pounded him into the ground if we woke up with good enough luck.....

Yes, but he's had even less governmental experience than Sarah Palin...

And he's had NO experience of how things are run on a national level....

That does not amke a good presidential resume in my book....

Also so far everytime we try and elect a fisical conservative, it seems to just mean they don't raise taxes but still spend just as much money as the other guys.... pushing the buck down the line to ourselves in a few years.

I'll settle for someone who is honest and says he isn't afraid to raise taxes if that is what is called for....

That's because they are the highest officers that can be quietly promoted to the rank. Full Colonels and above require the approval of Congress. Since their rank is a matter of public record, they cannot be plausibly denied.

It strikes me as being odd that Fox News now thinks it's OK for the people to assess our national security posture and/or history based on a book, hearsay, and unnamed sources. All of which traditionally stood for a conspiracy or trutherism. This is also after the DoD destroyed copies of Shaffer's book. This would have been unheard of during the Bush White House years.

Maybe. Napolitano is a hack of a host, so maybe he just let it ride. I'm going to wait before saying they've changed. One incident is not enough, there must be at least two, since one could be an accident.

Napolitano studied the material pretty well, considering his questions. So I think it was quite purposefully done.

More than it just being about hating Obama, much of the rightwing movement is as much about hating the government as a whole. Granted, it's a Democratic government, but it occurred to me there's this weird, kinda anarchist criss-crossing from either side. The birth of the rightwing anarchist? I can see Fox jumping on that bandwagon.

93 Gus  Sat, Oct 9, 2010 7:24:38pm

Well. Let the so called conservatives have fun with this Able Danger conspiracy theory. It largely implicates the Bush White House, Donald Rumsfeld, Curt Weldon (R), and others. Weldon said Mohamed Atta's name was on the chart just days after 911. I don't know much about this but there it is.

What a surprise. G. Edward Griffin:

By 1964, Griffin had completed his first book, The Fearful Master, on the United Nations, a challenging topic that recurs throughout his writings. When George Wallace ran for U.S. president in the election of 1968, winning five states for the paleoconservative third-party American Independent Party, Griffin served as a writer for Wallace's vice presidential candidate, Curtis LeMay,[1] a retired General of the Air Force. In the next year, Griffin began producing political films for American Media of Los Angeles[1] (later moving to Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village, California), of which he is president.[6] While he describes his work as the output of "a plain vanilla researcher", Griffin also agrees with the Los Angeles Daily News characterizing him as "Crusader Rabbit".[7]

Griffin has been a member and officer of the conservative John Birch Society for much of his life[8][9] and a contributing editor to its magazine, The New American.[10] Since the 1960s, Griffin has spoken and written at length about the Society's theory of history involving "communist and capitalist conspiracies" over banking systems (including the Federal Reserve), American foreign policy, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the United Nations.[8][11][12] From 1962 to 1975, he completed nine books and seven film productions; his 1969 video lecture, More Deadly Than War: The Communist Revolution in America, was printed in English and Dutch. In 1974, he published World Without Cancer, and in 1975, he wrote a sympathetic biography of Society founder Robert W. Welch, which was well received by members of the organization.[13][14] Six of his documentaries from the early period were re-released in 2001 as Hidden Agenda: Real Conspiracies that Affect our Lives Today.

131 Gus  Sat, Oct 9, 2010 7:51:34pm

re: #130 Gus 802

In 2002, Griffin founded Freedom Force International, a libertarian activist network,[6][53] whose members value individual freedom above government power. The organization's position that the exclusive role of government is to protect people's rights and property, not to provide services like welfare, reflects Griffin's view that collectivism and freedom "are mortal enemies." One of the organization's stated goals is to elect people with such views to government offices and onto the boards of nonprofit organizations—true to its motto, "Don't fight city hall when you can BE city hall."[54]

In 2006, Griffin was interviewed for the documentary film America: Freedom to Fascism.[55] He endorsed Ron Paul for U.S. president in the 2008 election.[6]

lol Did you read his Wiki?

The "Mandrake mechanism"

The Mandrake mechanism is a term coined by Griffin in this book. Mandrake the Magician was a comic strip character from the 1940s. He had the ability to magically create things and, when appropriate, make them disappear.[44] Griffin's view is similar to many other gold-standard supporters' critique of the fractional reserve banking system and the Federal Reserve in particular: that it makes money "magically" appear from nothing.

“What in the World are They Spraying?”!!11ty

By now everyone has seen crisscrossing streaks of white clouds trailing behind jet aircraft, stretching from horizon to horizon, eventually turning the sky into a murky haze. Our innate intelligence tells us these are not mere vapor trails from jet engines, but no one yet has probed the questions: who is doing this and why. With the release of this video, all of that has changed. Here is the story of a rapidly developing industry called geo-engineering, driven by scientists, corporations, and governments intent on changing global climate, controlling the weather, and altering the chemical composition of soil and water — all supposedly for the betterment of mankind. Although officials insist that these programs are only in the discussion phase, evidence is abundant that they have been underway since about 1990 — and the effect has been devastating to crops, wildlife, and human health. We are being sprayed with toxic substances without our consent and, to add insult to injury, they are lying to us about it. Do not watch this documentary if you have high blood pressure.

I mean did you know that the US government along with it's corporate masters have figured out how to create hurricanes? They're sending them to the US on purpose and have been doing so for around 10 years. It took them a bit to work out the kinks but they started getting it right after a few years. This is hilarious:

The Department of Energy did not speak with Cybercast News Service about the project, but scientists familiar with the line of research say it grows out of a proposal first articulated by Paul Crutzen, who won the 1995 Nobel Prize for his work discovering that there is a hole in the ozone over the Antarctic.

Crutzen proposed sending aircraft 747s to dump huge quantities of sulfur particles into the far-reaches of the stratosphere to cool down the atmosphere.

It's hilarious because a) it's from CNS news and b) a 747 cannot fly up to the "far-reaches of the stratosphere". At most it can cruise in the lower stratosphere.

You are a dedicated mother.

Dedicated was the parents who were there all day, moving the equipment and cooking food for 75 kids.

Dedicated is next weekend (don't expect to see me here) when I am going to be the chaperone parent sleeping on a middle school gym floor between the boys and girls.

I am considering going on facebook to see if I can't get as many names as possible as couples within the band (I know of two off the top of my head), so I know who to watch.

This is hilarious:

It's hilarious because a) it's from CNS news and b) a 747 cannot fly up to the "far-reaches of the stratosphere". At most it can cruise in the lower stratosphere.

Can it even reach the tropopause?

They suffer from a hate of authority and a need to feel they have special knowledge setting them apart from the general rut of humanity. All their Bad Craziness flows from those two traits.

Most lefties are non-authoritarian, but conspiracy theorists have paranoia fed fears that are not limited to the left by any means. Many on the right are paranoid about government and have most recently transfered that to climate scientists.

BTW, my adventure into insanity this evening started from a search into Ron Paul's tea party speech....
Virginia Tea Party Patriots Convention: Ron Paul at Home

The other fresh part of Paul's speech, the part no one else is trying here: Lecturing a skeptical crowd about the drug war and the war in Afghanistan. This is nothing new for Paul. It's what endeared him to a new coalition of young voters and old libertarians in 2008. It's also a sign that Paul is still considering a 2012 presidential run. He likes to win arguments; it's a new feeling. The impeding victory of his son in Kentucky's Senate race will prove that he's still winning.

Seems small potatoes now. But If you can dig up video of the speech then good for you. thutherism is now mainstreamed, opposition to the war in Afghanistan is mainstreamed, support for Israel will be plummeting soon on the right. It's all part of the package,.

I made a mistake. I didn't hear this on the Hannity show, it was Medved, about five years ago. Medved gets more nutbags on his show than Hannity. Some troofer nut claimed that no airplane hit the Pentagon. Medved kept asking him "Where's Barbara Olson" and the nutbag came up with this complete lame excuse. I don't remember what Medved said.

I no longer listen to any of these shows. My car's sound system is busted, and if I ever do get it fixed I will listen to....music.

Now this year, they're behind, and I think the parents and the teacher think it's his fault.

Should I tell the permanent teacher what was really going on? I could, but I don't want to get my daughter involved.

There is to come, I propose, a great day of reckoning in America over the belief system we've built around of "real estate".

Namely, that where we live really ought to be about where we live, and not about it as an "investment".

Assuming we are not on the precipice of some great deflationary spiral (as predicted by some doomers/economists), inflation will bite hard into the wallets of many Americans in a few years. Housing will be awkward for many, being priced out of the reach.

An investment is something you sell. Try "heirloom," maybe but you're just establishing that someone in your family won't have to buy a diamond when they get married, but after you're dead.

True. That's one of my biggest fears once the economy start moving again. I'm pretty sure that rents are going to hit the roof and start climbing yearly.

This one of the things I really admired about my building owners. They've never sold a building to a speculator. That was the founders standard. They've created investors for buildings but none have been sold to convert into condos. This was even true during the last boom years.

Yup, that's one of the sales-methods popular today - call something an "investment."

They even do it with digital cameras (go look at an online digicam forum) - calling a rapidly depreciating asset an "investment" is certainly a sign that Orwell was right.

I'd say do it, but make sure the teacher can keep a secret. The teacher really does need to know what went wrong and plan accordingly.

There was so much over construction in the US that the real estate is currently market deeply depressed. Renting out the empty houses is a possibility and that should keep rents in many places in check for a year or two. After that - look out.

An investment is something you sell. Try "heirloom," maybe but you're just establishing that someone in your family won't have to buy a diamond when they get married, but after you're dead.

When I got married we were broke (we're still broke, of course), and we didn't buy an engagement ring. I just wear my wedding band. I commented to my friends in passing that maybe for our tenth anniversary or something, if times are better, maybe I'll buy myself a diamond in a matching setting, just because.

One of said friends then offered me her engagement ring from her ex. It's an heirloom. Apparently when they divorced, he asked his new fiancee if she wanted it, and she said no, reasonably enough after his first wife had had it for eight years. So he left it with my friend, who didn't want to sell it because, heck, it was her ex-husband's grandma's.

I told her that while I appreciated her generosity, I really didn't think I should have it either. Luckily, the conversation got her thinking, and she called her ex-brother-in-law, and asked if he wanted it, and he had it reset in a man's ring as a gift for his long-time boyfriend. Everything worked out, it's still in the family, and the brother-in-law and his sweetie are thinking of adopting, so it could be handed down yet.

These things are so damn complicated!

We used to do that at the high school. I sat near the hardest junior English teacher in the school, and there would be a line out the door, of parents waiting to talk to him.

The twist to that is down zoning. They down zoned Denver which means no more high density housing. It was hard enough before and now it will be even harder. The days of building a moderate apartment building in a city which you can rent out for even 750 a month for 1 BR are long gone. What happens is investors then try to maximize the profit by designing it and marketing it as luxury apartments. There is no requirement for affordable house in rental units. Only with condos. Even then what they call affordable is high.

It's to make sure that if something happens to your child, you will have enough for a burial to soothe your broken heart, if such were possible.

Life insurance sales often rely on the fact that no one wants to think too hard about what they're buying. I once sat down with the HR lady at my new job, and she explained that you got X amount of life insurance with the benefits, but you could buy more.

I said, "I'm twenty-five, and single, no kids. If I walk under a bus tomorrow, my parents will need enough money for the funeral, and to pay off my credit cards. What you're offering is more than enough for that. If I get married, we'll talk."

She looked REALLY startled. And said something like, "Well, aren't you clear-minded."

OMG that's almost what happened in Denver. Around Washington Park cute little craftsman bungalows were selling for about 70K. In the blink of an eye they're now selling the LOT for 350K and calling it Wash Park. Mind you I did make some money on that boom. Still, my rates haven't really moved that much. I was also renting a little carriage house for 250 a month which I got approved over the phone because the guy "liked my voice". No more.

Sounds leftist... I know.

Yet here we see, in the commercial real estate market, exactly that. What you described has happened everywhere. In the San Diego region, where housing is higher than in many places, over the last few decades but especially since around the end of the last bubble we've seen large real estate holding/managing companies becoming the standard, and the small time land-lord slipping away. The large commercial companies only care about a % return/yr, and really don't have a connection to the property they own or the people who inhabit the property.

To some it may sound leftist but egalitarianism isn't a leftist concept. Fairness, an equitable playing field. It is a fact that we have strayed far from even respecting the idea of fairness. Too many people have become complacent in accepting a status quo that doesn't even work for them but are afraid to speak up because they want to be part of the group.
