They will recover serial numbers from scattered parts. If stolen, they will know from when and where. If not somebody is about to get raided. The response to this is going to be all out, just like after Oklahoma city.

The “shooting into power stations” idea was one of the suggestions, er, warnings, in G. Gordon Liddy’s notorious Omni article back in the 80s. He even specifically suggested using .458 mag. rifles, though today’s terrorists would have .50 BMGs.
