Ah, so a smart kid would put down Swahili, and then just tell the parents they had started getting spam calls asking for money to help a Nigerian general’s widow.

Not so smart. Swahili is not spoken in Nigeria, but rather in Kenya and Tanzania. Africa has more languages than Europe, and that’s counting Basque and Flemish and Albanian.

John McWhorter has criticized Afro-centric themed schools for using Swahili for this very reason. That language has nothing in common with the languages spoken in the places where slaves were taken for use in America [a few percent], the Caribbean [more], or Brazil [many more].

While it is the language of the place where slaves were taken for use in the Turkish empire and in Iraq, that’s another story and one that these same schools don’t touch on. Don’t even know about, probably.

And why is there no talk about the harsh legacy of slavery on Afro-Iraqis? Because the Iraqis killed every last one of their slaves, and all their families, after a failed slave revolt, a bit less than a thousand years ago. Why this is not worth a line or two, alongside the accounts of the evils of the western slave trade, is a mystery.
