As fewer and fewer people remember a historical event, it becomes less and less real and impactful, opening it up to absurd comparisons by those who’ve never had to live it. For example, I would imagine that in another 80 years, on the 100th anniversary of 9/11, if America is still a thing, most of the younger generations will be joking about it like it’s not a thing that was permanently etched in the minds of hundreds of millions of people at one point in history.

Depends. For the flipside look at the screaming refusal of Turkey to accept that what they did to the Armenians was Genocide or the thousand years of wars in the Balkans. Not many jokes about either in those places.
