They don’t do their best, though. Not at all. We don’t do our best in the prisons in the least to keep prisoners safe from harm. Our private prison system model needs a thorough goddamn reworking.

My suggestion is to keep them private, but tie payments to the prison to the recidivism rate of the ex-cons. Then we’d see innovation in rehabilitation. At the moment, prisons make more money the more prisoners they get, so they have a literal disincentive to deter prisoners from committing future crimes. That ain’t good.
