Which distinction the Trump-humpers and Wallnuts are probably never going to make, as the fundamental opposition to “illegal immigration” is, for a disgracefully large segment of the electorate, rooted in racist-prejudicial opposition to ALL (non-white) immigration. A subtext which most of the political and news media tend to figleaf with terms like “nativism” or “nationalism” - when they just don’t elide over it entirely….

Yup. They created immigration laws in the first place to keep non-white people out.

It was literally identity politics (white identity politics).
