This was an interesting specific example of the effect at work:

I suppose that people in rural areas have more of a tendency to cluster in like-minded groups, which would reinforce their points of view, without any easy access to alternatives.

I was raised as a country boy and I’ve been livng in “The Big Ciities” since 1985. I think the difference is that city folk are more reliant on government services while country/rural folk only deal with the federal government when they go to the post office and file their income tax returns.

A definite difference in experiences.
