… Attacking two important areas of science, evolution and climate change, is a luxury we can’t afford.

On occasion I’m still interacting with a few creationists, and while it is usually a futile exercise on rare occasions perhaps I can be of use in that arena.

I do not think the outward manifestations - particular attacks on specialty fields of science, in these cases biological systematics and climatology - will by themselves be the cause of a downward spiral in our society’s functioning. Rather, beneath the surface, that which is motivating the attacks on the particular scientific understandings, is more important.

In both of these cases the scientific evidence is telling us something we don’t want to hear. In the case of evolution the science is telling us that we are indeed, 100%, part of the animal kingdom, and just that. In the case of climate change, the science is telling us that we can’t have everything we want and that we are limited. Both attack the religious worldview embedded deeply into the American psyche - that we humans (and especially Americans) are partly supernatural.
