Why do we need a law or constitutional restriction on that? Why not just let the voters determine what is or isn’t a deal breaker? I mean, under things currently you could be born in the U.S., leave the country while you are one day old, live in another country for 60 years without any interaction with Americans, and then run for president.

The legend I always heard was that they did it to prevent Hamilton(Virgin Islands born) from running. I have no idea how true that it is however. Also, you have to be a resident for seven years before running for president so that scenario doesn’t work. Not that I disagree with your point. I really think the laws for running for president should be similiar to the Senate. We’ve had plenty of capable foreign born statespeople from Albert Gallatin to Madeline Albright.
