Interesting bit of movie trivia. I hadn’t known that, and I know alot about the making of The Wizard of Oz. My favorite story is that one of the jackets purchased from a second-hand store for Harry Morgan’s wardrobe in the Kansas scenes actually turned to have belonged to L. Frank Baum, the man who wrote the book the movie was based on.

The best biography on Lahr (“Notes on a Cowardly Lion”) was written by his son John Lahr, that’s where I read that.
