You’ve just committed a “use mention error” by mixing belief in the veracity of the stories of faith with belief in “the stories”. For example, an atheist can believe in the “concept” of a god, but not believe in a god.

Sure, I believe in the parables too, but I don’t think they are true.

As long as parables are simply stories and not monikers of the tenets of faith, then why don’t we all pray to Beowulf for saving us from Grendel?

The parables were never meant to be other than stories. Jesus doesn’t say ‘this really happened just the other day’, although some of them might have, he says “this is what the Kingdom of God is like”.
