The latter is true.
The former is false. We will stop burning petroleum as soon as it is cheaper and easier to get all our energy from other sources.

And to have the infrastructure and delivery systems to make use of that energy. Doesn’t matter how cheap a form of energy is if you can’t make a car use it, or there are no cars that take it, and no gas pumps to deliver it.
