re: #394 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

When my sister used to go to *work* horse shows part of the competitions were 2-, 4- and I even 8-horse hitch. Less I think about being able to maneuver the wagon about as compared to how well matched and behaved the teams were. And as anyone who has seen Budweiser commercials knows a well-matched and trained team of Clydesdales are a wonder to watch.

I saw Gussie Busch driving a six-horse team of imported English driving horses, pulling a replica of one of Queen Elizabeth’s carriages in a horse show in St Louis once. He was in his 80s then, and these were Big Strong horses. The show ring also served as an ice hockey rink in the winter, so you know the size. The exit gate was maybe 16 feet wide, and set to the side of one end. As the demo was over, he brought them up into a real spanking trot and did a couple of figure eights and then aimed at the gate at full tilt. No one in the arena could breathe. All the special guests riding in the carriage were probably not breathing, either! He hit the opening perfectly and went out at full speed. The man may have been an autocrat, but he could sure handle the reins!
