My understanding, to greatly simply it, is that they want the U.S. out of Muslim lands. The fact that in some cases it was Muslim rulers who invited the U.S. in for protection is apparently irrelevant.

we do not want our military policy to make enemies that we don’t already have. however, pretending that we wouldn’t have our current enemies were it not for our current military policies is naive…
