If nothing else, the wingnuts should think of the pursuit of knowledge as a national security issue. (Something they’re supposedly concerned about.) If the US gets overtaken in GDP *and* technological/scientific knowhow by BRIC countries, the game’s over. The reverence that Chinese and Indians especially have for knowledge and education is humbling.

Wingnuts detest knowledge. It is the provenance of the elites and leads to people questioning their (wingnuts’) authority.

It also threatens religious belief (in their world), so it is from Satan.
