re: #373 legalpad

I wish some of the religious folks could understand this. What they seem to want does not help religion, or freedom of religion. It helps take away individual rights, not just religiously related rights, but rights as such. It empowers those who want government to run every aspect of our lives. That x number of politicians feel obliged to proclaim their disbelief in evolution means that there are a fair number of people out there who have yet to understand what they are trying to do to themselves.

Religious fundamentalism is a part of the unconstrained vision- the same vision of many socialists. They think government should decide morals and ethics instead of society. That a handful of elites know best, and they’ll impose this upon us for our own good. The left-right dichotomy doesn’t work in this case, but if you read Thomas Sowell’s A Conflict of Visions, it becomes obvious that many on the right and left share the same mindset- it’s just that their solutions are different. Likewise- there are people on the left and right that understand the importance of the rule of law and individual rights. You might call these people moderates or centrists, but I personally don’t subscribe to the left-right dichotomy anymore.
