Most of the anti-gay sentiment (or really, anti- any group of people) stems from ignorance. It’s easy to hate people and think that it’s okay to deny them the same rights you enjoy when you don’t really think of them as people. Being forced to confront and understand the fact that they are people just like you rapidly changes most peoples’ outlook.

A whole lot of people that are anti-equality on marriage are so because they don’t actually know any gay people. It’s a lot harder to look a person in the eye and tell them they don’t deserve the same rights and privileges as you do.

I think it’s more likely that they don’t know anyone that they know to be gay but yeah your point is true nonetheless. I think a lot of people especially in more homogeneous areas have this idea that gay people are from some other world compared to them when in reality gay people are like straight people- people in all shapes and forms and all sorts of different interests and personality types.
