Here’s a simple, unadorned open thread, on what can only be called a rather slow news day, as I continue going through the site and making things mobile-friendly. Next up on the list: LGF Spy mode, our live-streaming view of comment threads. In fact, it’s almost ready to launch…

It’s currently raining like hell here on LI. It’s 40 degrees, but the damp is making it feel much more raw.

That was one of the first photos I took when I got my K-5. She tends towards being the most photogenic of our three.

Well, when I am not tormenting her.

And yet out of all our cats, she is the least likely to cause issues.

Of course, she rather epitomizes fat, happy, and lazy. Not to mention ungraceful.

Such grace.

LGF Spy is starting to look pretty good on my iPhone. This kind of live-streaming page is interesting on a smart phone, though; in some ways the full-size version is better because it lets you see more of the streaming comments at once.

That’s the image she wishes to convey. Yet if you upset her once too often, you’ll likely find something you cherish shredded or broken. The Feline Overlords are not to be trifled with.

Daily Banter - Adding staff, growing and amount of new daily material increased
Pando Daily - Newish website with always something new.
The Intercept - One tired, one trick pony rehashed screed a week if you’re lucky.

All human misdeeds can be smoothed over with a can of wet food.

However, she did manage to shatter a glass bowl that was holding change when she attempted to jump down from the window sill the other week.

And I’m fairly certain she’s knocked the speakers over twice.

Cat-like grace is an attribute she does not have.

You beat me to it D_F. Just because she likes to give the impression of being fat, dumb and lazy doesn’t mean that she’s not the one that is secretly giving the directions to the rest of the cat cabal. It’s a well know fact that cats often have the leader act like the stooge of the group in order to divert attention.

They both do it; it’s really funny. I wonder if it’s something they picked up as kittens together.

Our three cats are coming around now, but they were extremely miffed that we brought home a puppy. Two stayed in the basement, and the third - the one that is afaraid of any human that isn’t me or my wife - carried on like nothing even happened.

The youngest has been hopping up on my lap all afternoon and evening, making up for lost pettin’ time. But they’re still not real happy about it.

NASA photo captures strange bright light coming out of Mars

A NASA camera on Mars has captured what appears to be artificial light emanating outward from the planet’s surface.
The photo, beamed millions of miles from Mars to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., was taken last week, apparently by one of two NASA rovers on the red planet.
Although the space agency hasn’t issued any official statement yet about the phenomenon, bloggers and NASA enthusiasts have started chiming in.
Scott C. Waring, who maintains the website UFO Sightings Daily, posted the photo April 6.
Waring noted that the light shines upward, as if from the ground, and is very flat across the bottom.
“This could indicate there there is intelligent life below the ground and uses light as we do,” Waring wrote on his website. “This is not a glare from the sun, nor is it an artifact of the photo process.”

NYPD, FDNY Brawl At Charity Hockey Match (VIDEO)

They may be “New York’s Finest” and “New York’s Bravest,” but they won’t be competing for “New York’s Classiest” after what happened on Sunday, when police and firefighters brawled at a charity hockey match.

The fight set Twitter, YouTube and Instagram aflame with photos and videos of the violence.

Be warned, the videos contain some language that’s every bit as harsh as the action, which took place at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, home of the New York Islanders NHL team.

The teams were tied, 3-3, in the second period when the benches-clearing brawl erupted. NYPD eventually won, 8-5, breaking FDNY’s five-year winning streak.

Given that the game in the picture was on the Allied submarine campaign in the Pacific I referred to him doing that as being a “diligent escort” since it was pretty much impossible to carry out operations against convoys when he was sleeping on most of the western Pacific.

Walk away from excess running, researchers say

You’ve heard of the runner’s high. Researchers now want you to hear about runner’s plaque — coronary artery plaque.

In short: Running super-long distances for many years might backfire on you.

“Years of extreme exercise efforts appear to erase some benefits you get from moderate exercise, so that your risk of heart disease, of dying of coronary disease, is the same as a sedentary person,” said James O’Keefe, preventive cardiologist at St. Luke’s Hospital.

So, that old maxim, “Everything in moderation” applies everywhere to everything, no doubt.

Jim Fixx immediately came to mind. Remember, he did run for 17 yrs, after being overweight and a smoker at age 35 when he began, and made a small fortune at it.

I never ran, or even “jogged”, but I “power” walked my way through my 40s and stayed between 105-110 lbs.

Relevant as just another example of legislators messing with simple things* just to prove themselves godly to their base. And the kerfluffle has been picked up nationally since I can find NPR and FOX articles on it.

I think the initial attempt to modify the language was shot down as not germane to the motion. But the legislator came back a few days later with an amendment that was approved along with some other amendments. So it now has the usual joint-committee stuff to go through since the houses passed different versions.

* - Simple in that they could have just allowed the designation to take place and moved on to more useful business. Instead, they decided to teach a third grader about politics rather than mammoths.

So today is the first part of my job interview. I’m meeting with two senior research analysts at 2:00 and the VP I spoke to on the phone at 2:30. I then have a test of some kind from 3-4.

I also have a phone interview Thursday at 3pm for the same job with the GM of an affiliate company. I’m assuming it’s because my role will somehow be tied to that affiliate, so they want to get to know me too, but since that guy is in Seattle, I have to wait a few days to talk to him.

I’m not quite sure what to do about the dress code. This was in my invite email: “Please note that [potential employer] is a very casual environment. Some of your interviewers will probably be wearing jeans. Please dress in what you will feel most comfortable and successful.” I had been considering a skirt and blouse, but reading that I think I’ll go for some jeans, a nice blouse and heels.

ALWAYS wear business formal to an interview, even if the interviewers are “dressed casual.” DO NOT WEAR JEANS, wear a nice skirt or dress slacks.

Mostly concur. If the prospective employer is ‘very casual’, then it’d say one does not need to be fully formal. But jeans are never appropriate for interview attire. A pair of dressy khakis would do well, IMO.

It might have been a “test”.

We weren’t even allowed to wear jeans during “casual Fridays” back in the 90s. And I never wore heels more than 2”, even though I’m only 5’ tall. I despised higher heels since they were so uncomfortable. Wore running shoes on the street. Even though I was only considered a “paraprofessional” I wore business suits, also, and liked them (law offices and banks tended to be more formal back then). Even guys who tried to wear jeans on casual days would be sent home, but I suppose when your boss is barely a 20-something, anything goes. : )

266 lawhawk  Apr 8, 2014 6:28:20am

re: #252 Lidane

Go with the suit/skirt route and don’t dress down. You want to look professional and first impressions count for a whole lot. You don’t want to send the wrong vibe by wearing jeans, even if the daily attire is much more casual than the business casual that has increasingly become the norm in business.

Best of luck!

Very slowly, as the middle- and upper-management echelons transition into non-boomer generationals, we are coming to terms with the idea that nobody gives a crap how formal you look when everybody is doing it just for its own sake. Customer-facing positions? Okay, yeah, you’ve got something there. But like in an IT shop where it’s all just coworkers, you all see each other every day and you’re just doing your jobs? What a giant waste of time and money.

Hm. Looks like business casual it is. I’ll skip the jeans but kick around some ideas. If I had black slacks it would be a no-brainer of wearing those with a nice blouse and low heels/flats, but the right cuff on my best pair of slacks is unraveling and it looks awful. I need to get it fixed.

I’ll figure something out. I have a few hours.

Well, I’d feel like a slob in jeans and a t-shirt. I didn’t mind wearing those when I worked in the lumber dept at Lowe’s, cashiering, but that was basically a dirty job.

I wore those “business” clothes because I liked the way I presented myself and I did come into contact with the public every single day. It was a matter of respect and consideration for those I came into contact with more than anything else, though.

Is the sport coat a western cut, to go with the boots? A bolo tie would be a nice touch.

But they’re evidently still using the name “Greystone” for their “foreign” affiliate.

en.wikipedia.org

In 2010, Greystone was acquired by current management. Greystone now operates as a standalone, management owned provider of protective support services and training.

A private security service, Greystone is registered in Barbados, and employs soldiers for off-shore security work through its affiliate Satelles Solutions, Inc.[74] Their web site advertises their ability to provide “personnel from the best militaries throughout the world” for worldwide deployment. Tasks can be from very small scale up major operations to “facilitate large scale stability operations requiring large numbers of people to assist in securing a region”.[74]

Erik Prince intended Greystone to be used for peacekeeping missions in areas like Darfur where military operations would need to take place to establish peace.[75]

Greystone had planned to open a training facility on the former grounds of the Subic Bay U.S. Naval Base, but those plans were later abandoned.[76]

Well, not exactly Romney, but Romney-founded Bain Capital, which is buying Manischewitz and adding it to its corporate stable.

Why?

Well, they must think that the kosher food designation will be a selling point for people who are health food conscious, or think that the kosher designation imparts some safety/health benefit.

Because it’s not necessarily a growth sector as those identifying as Jews and keeping kosher is a very limited market at best.

For kosher consumers, the Maneschewitz brand is really lame. It’s like the brand you buy because you’re stuck out of town in some place where no Juice live.

Judge stops investigation into Battleground Texas

The inquiry began after conservative activist James O’Keefe and his group, Project Veritas, made a video that purported to show Battleground Texas workers talking about transcribing telephone numbers from voter registration cards they’d collected. O’Keefe said in the video that taking phone numbers violated Texas law, and Republican leaders, including Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, called for a criminal investigation.

Because Attorney General Greg Abbott and the Bexar County district attorney are running for re-election, the case was given to Economidy and Del Prado to investigate. The 18-page special prosecutor’s report found Battleground Texas’ activities were legal and in keeping with standard electioneering practices used by both political parties for decades.

“The Veritas video was little more than a canard and political disinformation,” the prosecutor’s report said. “The video was particularly unprofessional when it suggested that the actions of Battleground Texas were advocated by a Texas gubernatorial candidate and that the actions of a single volunteer deputy registrar may even involve private health data, which is not involved in the voter registration process.”

Looks like we’re arming Syrian Rebels again this week

Check Out the Syrian Rebels’ Insane New Missile Launcher

The video, which was uploaded to the site on Saturday, April 5, shows a man in a black sweater firing a TOW missile at what a narrator claims is a Syrian tank at a checkpoint in the village of Heesh, according to an analyst who translated the video from Arabic.
….
But the TOW missile has never shown up in the hands of rebel fighters in Syria, analysts said. That in and of itself marked a potential shift in the course of Syria’s three-year old civil war. Regardless of who supplied the weapon, it could give the rebels a leg up against Syrian military tanks. A video uploaded on April 1 also appears to show a Free Syrian Army fighter from the same group firing a TOW missile.

Possible but there were reports a few weeks ago that we promised the Saudis we’d give a handful (under 10 or so) rocket launchers to rebels if they promised to be nice and film the attacks to account for their use. The report was disputed a few days later. It’s hard to tell what we are or aren’t doing, it seems to change weekly.

The more things change, the more they stay the same for some people.

The new stay-at-home mom surge: It’s not who you think

today.com

“While that’s still true of some moms, researchers also argue that many women who stay at home are doing so at least partly because they can’t afford the child care costs and other expenses associated with going to work, especially if they can’t get a job that pays well.

(snip)

“In general, the Pew report showed, the least-educated mothers are most likely to be at home. About 21 percent of college-educated moms are stay-at-home moms, compared with 35 percent of high school graduates and 51 percent of moms with less than a high school diploma.

(snip)

“Cohn said Pew’s research also found that only a fraction of stay-at-home moms appear to be “opting out” of high pressure careers. The researchers found that women with at least a master’s degree and a family income of more than $75,000 made up just 5 percent of married stay-at-home moms with working husbands.”

I remember paying a full third of my paycheck for a babysitter or daycare (when I finally found one) when my kids were small, and they were in daycare or w/a sitter after school until they were 12 (and even after that age, needed a referee, being male siblings close in age). And if, as some say, you can pay $200/wk for one child at many centers, how can the low paid worker afford to go to work when care and transportation probably eat up the paycheck?

Rawstory: Liz Cheney says “Pelosi’ Spine Doesn’t Reach her Brain” if she’s Not Proud of Torture

Fox News contributor and failed Wyoming Senate candidate Liz Cheney on Tuesday defended her father by saying that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) “spine doesn’t seem to reach her brain” because she wasn’t proud of so-called enhanced interrogation used by the Bush administration.

In a Sunday interview with CNN, Pelosi has accused former Vice President Dick Cheney of encouraging torture by setting “a tone and an attitude for the CIA.”

And when it came to news that the CIA had misled Congress on the effectiveness of waterboarding and other interrogation techniques, Pelosi speculated that the former vice president was “proud” of the misrepresentation.

Speaking to Fox News on Tuesday, Dick Cheney’s daughter fired back at the California Democrat.

Thom Hartman: “I’m wondering, have we had a legitimately elected Republican president since Dwight Eisenhower?”

Carter chuckles and says he thinks so, but wouldn’t want to comment on that, and then sort of backs off the question. Carter does make a point to say:

“I don’t think that George W. Bush won the election in 2000, against Al Gore, because I think that he probably lost Florida and also nationwide. But the Supreme Court rules in our country - that’s what we have to accept.”

Senate Majority PAC’s nonsensical attack ad in Louisiana

“We’ve been battered by hurricanes, lost everything to floods. And for thousands of Louisianans, flood insurance and hurricane relief are our only protection. But the out-of-state billionaire Koch brothers funded the fight to let flood insurance premiums soar, helping the insurance companies and cut off hurricane relief for Louisiana families. Now they’re spending millions to buy a Senate seat for Bill Cassidy so he can fight for them. If the Kochs and Cassidy win, Louisiana loses.”

-voiceover for new Senate Majority PAC ad attacking Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), who is challenging Sen. Mary Landrieu (D)
….
Television stations in Louisiana should be ashamed of falling for such an obvious gambit. Individual lines may be true, but the net effect is highly misleading. Surely, the standards for political advertising in Louisiana need to be higher if residents are going to have a civil political debate.

This is the third time in a month that the Fact Checker has given Four Pinocchios to an ad sponsored by Senate Majority PAC. That’s a pretty dreadful track record, and does little for the organization’s credibility more than six months before the midterm elections.

re: #389 Killgore Trout

Graph that sentence. “He” refers to Bush who Carter erroneously believes lost Florida and the Supreme court overruled the voters will. This was debunked ages ago and I assume you’re already aware of that. If you’re not you can look it up, I’m not going to debate conspiracy theories which were debunked 10 years ago.

Wait a tick. You posted, “Internationally renowned election expert declares Republicans steal election: President Carter Tells Thom Hartmann: ‘I Don’t Think George W. Bush Won’”

The interview, again:

Carter chuckles and says he thinks so, but wouldn’t want to comment on that, and then sort of backs off the question. Carter does make a point to say:

“I don’t think that George W. Bush won the election in 2000, against Al Gore, because I think that he probably lost Florida and also nationwide. But the Supreme Court rules in our country - that’s what we have to accept.”

What I’m having trouble understanding, and maybe its just me, but where did Carter state, infer, imply, hint, or to use your word, declare, that the 2000 election was stolen?

Or does everybody who disagreed with that ruling believe the 2000 election was stolen? I disagreed with that ruling. I thought it was fucking stupid. Does that mean I think the election was stolen?

Of course not. Nor am I privy to some conspiracy theory. There’s no conspiracy involved. I know what happened. The Florida Supreme Court ordered a statewide recount, and during that recount, the US Supreme Court ordered it stopped, then added a clause to that ruling that meant it could not be used as legal precedent - it applied to that case only.

I think, and I imagine Jimmy Carter thinks, that the statewide recount should have gone ahead. I also believe - but don’t know nor do I declare - that Gore would have won had those votes been counted, but I am not sure, that is my opinion, subject to change. But it doesn’t make me a conspiracy theorist, any more than it makes Jimmy Carter.

Be sensible. Why the sarcasm and hyperbole? Is it necessary? The whole debacle is nigh on 15 years old for crying outs.

Kate Mulgrew Narrates Film About How The Sun Revolves Around The Earth

It’s a sad day for fans of Star Trek Voyager: Captain Kathryn Janeway herself is lending her voice to a “documentary” about how the Sun revolves around the Earth and how NASA is leading a conspiracy to keep the truth away from us. Oh, boy.

The film, entitled The Principle, purports to be challenging the notion that we as humans are “nothing special” in relation to the vastness of the Universe. The trailer also features theoretical physicist Michio Kaku as well as cosmologists Lawrence Krauss and Max Tegmark. We’re going to hope that they maybe didn’t know they were going to be in a movie that’s also about Geocentricism, because it’s not until the 1-minute mark that the movie’s principal, Robert Sungenis suggests, “You can go on some websites of NASA to see that they’ve started to take down stuff that might hint to a geocentric universe.” Uh, what?

Something tells me that if there’s anyone credible attached to this dreck, it’ll be because they’ve probably been edited way out of context..

And it is a schtick, too.
KT - are you trying to be funny, sarcastic, irritating, with your recent posts? e.g. “OMG Halliburton!” at reports of american mercenaries in the Ukraine. What precisely do you mean by that? I suppose you’re trying to take the mickey out of people who had concerns about the role of independent contractors like Halliburton in the recent conflict in Iraq. Presumably, you think nothing of such concerns yourself, and believe those who hold such concerns are being silly or ignorant of the facts, hence “OMG Halliburton!”
Or perhaps you’re trying to say that fears or concerns related to Halliburton and independent contractors in conflict zones are actually unwarranted and ridiculous.

I can’t tell, but this sort of ‘hit and run’, quick sarcastic post with a reference to some media that seemingly reflects poorly on your political opponents, is just lazy partisanship.

Why not expand upon the articles, so we can discuss them? Better that than a brief and sarcastic comment that does little to further the discussion, improve the thread, or allow genuine and open (and friendly) debate.

8 ball says chances of never. Seriously, it’s always chickenshits like Liz, her old man, and Hannity that get the most war hungry yet never actually bothered to fight wars themselves. I hate using the chickenhawk word as a non-veteran but damn I’m just sick of these assholes who ride anyone who doesn’t share their war thirst yet who couldn’t even be bothered to fight themselves. Liz could have enlisted while her father was Sec of Defense under the first Bush just as her father could have enlisted in Vietnam but neither did.

Mandatory conscription. Every single man, woman, young adult and everything in between. No exceptions. Rich, poor, healthy, sick, young, old. Everyone fights, everyone has skin in the game. Periods of service no less than four years (to cover presidential and congressional terms and give policy decisions a chance to have impact).

If you want to see national opinions on foreign policy take a drastic turn away from this chickenhawk bullshit, you have to make it affect them. Every single one of them. It’s easy to be pro-war when you’re rich and/or influential enough that it doesn’t affect you and yours.

Good news: No need to hound opponents, close their businesses and force them out of their jobs
Simply talking to people about same-sex marriage makes them more tolerant

It turns out that good old fashioned human-to-human conversation really can change people’s minds. A new experiment from political scientists Donald Green and Michael LaCour finds that a well-designed house-to-house canvass can turn same-sex marriage opponents around — and sometimes bring their friends on board too.

Green and Lacour surveyed 9,507 Los Angeles County voters, all of whom lived in precincts that voted in favor of Proposition 8 (the 2008 ballot measure which banned same-sex marriage in California), six times over the course of about two and a half months.

The result was dramatic. As you’d expect, households that got the recycling message didn’t change their views on same-sex marriage or gay people at all in response (they didn’t even change their views on recycling!). But those getting the same-sex marriage script very quickly grew considerably more sympathetic toward gay people and gay rights. Before, respondents felt the same about same-sex marriage as Nebraskans; after, they felt the same as folks from Massachusetts. When the canvasser was gay, the results were even bigger. While straight canvassers’s effect wore off over time, gay canvassers’s didn’t.

Most of the anti-gay sentiment (or really, anti- any group of people) stems from ignorance. It’s easy to hate people and think that it’s okay to deny them the same rights you enjoy when you don’t really think of them as people. Being forced to confront and understand the fact that they are people just like you rapidly changes most peoples’ outlook.

A whole lot of people that are anti-equality on marriage are so because they don’t actually know any gay people. It’s a lot harder to look a person in the eye and tell them they don’t deserve the same rights and privileges as you do.

Sorry to hear you’ve not been well. How are you feeling now? I’m relatively new here, have only been posting since the last month (though was registered for a while before that). I don’t know too many of the posters so I’m unsure what’s being referred to here, with respect to the comments on your own ‘schtick’. I’ll assume it is serious enough.

If you ever feel like you want to talk, and you see me online, I’m absolutely happy to oblige. I won’t pretend to know what your demons are about, but I’ve faced some in my time, and I know alienation can make them worse.

I hope this doesn’t come off as patronising or utterly lunkheaded, but when I’ve had been seriously depressed, I’ve found that mindfulness meditation, sunlight, cardiovascular exercise, and socialising outdoors helped considerably (moreso than the less healthy options I chose for short term pain relief).

Right and to some extent I get that especially with older people who came of age in a time where people who were gay were institutionalized. Now that said, it’s really hard to have patience with some people given the way gay people have and still are treated in some parts of this world. As I said, I’m willing to concede that not every opponent of SSM is a frothing at the mouth bigot but at the same time, I’ve seen too many opponents of SSM(and LGBT rights in general) refuse to even concede that LGBT people are our fellow human beings let alone deserving of the same equality as you and I.

Snowden in Vanity Fair:

On allegations that he has “a doomsday cache” in his possession: In response to whispers in the intelligence community that Snowden has “a doomsday cache” in his possession, Snowden retorts, “Who would set up a system that incentivizes others to kill them?”

Ummm, that’s exactly what Greenwald reported after talking with you.

Who’s obfuscating/lying now?

Via Greenwald in a 7/13 news report:

Glenn Greenwald, the Guardian journalist who first published the documents Snowden leaked, said in a newspaper interview published on Saturday that the U.S. government should be careful in its pursuit of the former computer analyst.

“Snowden has enough information to cause harm to the U.S. government in a single minute than any other person has ever had,” Greenwald said in an interview in Rio de Janeiro with the Argentinian daily La Nacion.

“The U.S. government should be on its knees every day begging that nothing happen to Snowden, because if something does happen to him, all the information will be revealed and it could be its worst nightmare.”

Where’d Greenwald get that idea, if not Snowden? Did he invent that detail out of whole cloth, or did Snowden really have something like this set up with the journalists who have access to the cache?

Now, we’re going to get (or expect to get) all manner of denial and obfuscation from the principals, especially Greenwald. Considering how he’s gotten so many other details about these technical subjects wrong, exaggerated threats, and claimed the US engaged in illegal spying on allies and threats alike (neither of which is illegal under US law and that said spying is part of the NSA mission), are we really going to know what is going on here?

Then, there’s the issue with the number of documents taken. Snowden plays games here - claiming that he doesn’t know how many he took. That’s plausible, considering that he probably cut and pasted all documents/directories without counting their contents. But the NSA probably knows how many were involved, and they’re saying 1.7 million. Snowden thinks that’s a high figure, but isn’t willing or able to be any clearer.

Howdy, Lizards,

My day began with attempting to schedule an appointment with a hand surgeon to look at my broken finger. I was told since the break was caused by a vehicle (slammed in the tailgate of a truck), the claim would need to be handled through the vehicle owner’s no-fault.

Upon contacting the driver of the vehicle, I learned that he in fact did not own it - it was a rental. I’m currently waiting to get claim information back from the vehicle renter, because the surgeon won’t even schedule an appointment without a claim number. As a backup, I talked to my auto insurance agent as a contingency to see if, failing everything else, we could handle it ourselves.

I’m sure the hospital visit and subsequent surgical procedure in Rhode Island was easily a couple grand, and these surgeons probably don’t come cheap (I’m assuming that - they wouldn’t even give me an out-of pocket cost for an initial consult. No claim number, no appointment.

Sorry to rant. Oddly, my finger doesn’t even hurt at all today, but the tender mercies of the insurance game are giving me a pain in an entirely different region.

I hope the injury has no effect on your musicianship.

Thanks for the kind words, WW. I appreciate it.

I sure hope not. I really don’t know, to be honest. I was hoping the surgeon could shed a little light on that, but I’m completely at the mercy of a crew member who’s not known for being the most reliable person.

In spite of what happened (and the doctor removing my nail, suturing a cut and then replacing my nail), my finger barely hurts at all. I’m trying to take that as a good sign, but I’m kind of anxious and it would help to have an expert opinion.

Supporting Prop 8 and support a guy that supports Prop 8 are totally different because >reasons.

And this sort of thing is why I took issue with OKC’s way of handling the issue, aside from my objections to the technological problems inherent in it.

And I’m sorry, but CEO man? Nobody is stupid enough to believe that you had no idea where a Republican congressman stood on the issue of gay rights. They make themselves crystal clear, frequently. You fucked up by calling out another CEO on supporting anti-gay stuff and hoping that nobody would call you out on yours; own it and stop making lame-ass excuses.

Agreed but the statement is enough to get the press coverage of the hypocrisy to die down, it seems supporters of ousting Eich didn’t care anyways. OK Cupid guy made his donation for business purposes and I’m warming up to the idea that ousting Eich was just a viral marketing campaign for OK Cupid anyways. Profits and marketshare for the company will increase, mission accomplished.

At least Eich was up-front about it. Who’s the bigger scumbag: The guy that donates to anti-gay causes because he just straight-up doesn’t think gays should get married, or the guy that donates to anti-gay causes because it’s good for his business and he doesn’t care that it hurts gay people in the process?

It’s okay, he was only thinking of the money at the time, so it’s different.

Some things don’t work in reverse, though. How many gay people don’t know any straight people? I doubt there are many gay people who can isolate themselves from straight people, even if they wanted to. Also, ‘gay’ is not an ideology.

I’m trying to understand KT’s point - Spend time with people who think you’re evil and degenerate, and you may come to agree with them? You might like them even if they still think you’re evil and degenerate?

It’s easy to say things you don’t believe when personal gain is on the line.

What they say still matters, even if they don’t believe it, though.

Do you understand what I’m saying? That if Eich had just said “That contribution was a mistake, and I wouldn’t do it now” then that would have dealt with much of the furor?

It wouldn’t have dealt with all of it, because prop 8 and donating to a Republican are not, actually, the same thing. Prop 8, and it’s campaign, was only, solely, just about denying civil rights to gay people. There was nothing else to it than that, and it did it through demonization of gay people, scaremongering, and really crappy, horrible, bigoted tactics.

When I contribute to a Democrat, I am also contributing to some shitty positions, but I believe their good positions outweigh them.

A lot of these stories trying to scaremonger up a slippery slope actually disprove that slippery slope, which is nice, but, weirdly, people tend to be ignoring that disproof.

But it does change things. If bigots don’t openly express their bigotry, fewer people are influenced by that bigotry, and bigotry recedes.

You have no way of knowing if the majority of things you’ve heard in your life, from anyone other than close friends, are things they sincerely believe. The words themselves are important.

This is a salient point. As it became less acceptable to say blatantly racist things in polite society, those opinions lost validity.

It also works in reverse.

A big part of the function of folks like Limbaugh and Coulter is to make it okay to publicly say things that Conservatives previously were ashamed or afraid to say. When they can say them, they find others who think the same way and they get their crazy, stupid beliefs validated.

There was a significant document drop, which corroborates the Smoking Gun’s earlier claimed report that Sharpton was an FBI informant. There’s a whole lot more detail now associated with the report.

And it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Sharpton doesn’t want anyone to know that he was a snitch for the FBI in dealing with the Genovese crime family. They have their ways of dealing with snitches.

Yep. And as another example: Killgore has been on his schtick since Occupy. His most latest and greatest is fanboying Clarence Thomas. Killgore may or may not be sincere; he might be offering his frequently troll-seeming opinions (like saying he doesn’t know if the VP of policy at Komen affects policy at Komen) sincerely, or he may be looking for negative attention, validating his self-identity as a libertarian contrarian, etc. There’s literally no way of knowing, and it doesn’t matter: whether he means it or not, he really types what he really types.
