re: #427 McSpiff

So in the case of someone suspected of being mentally disturbed, let’s go with the usual example of the ex-employee, walks into an office with a rifle or otherwise visibly armed. At what point do you open fire?

Sorry if it seems like I’m grilling you, but as you know, I’m Canadian. While I often hear about how concealed carry would stop random spree-killings like we all sorta seem to be discussing, I’m wondering how exactly a CC advocate would see it playing out in reality, both legally and from a personal moral stand point.

As I understand it (based on my reading), if the above scenario occurred, a CC person would be justified in immediately unholstering their weapon and disengaging the safety. Now, I would not advocate immediately taking aim, however. Better to keep the muzzle pointed at the ground and see if you can talk the other guy down. But if he starts to point the weapon at someone, then take aim, and possibly fire. The judgement as to when to cease attempting a peaceful solution varies between situations. I can’t offer definitive guidance for that. The basic premise, though, is to use deadly force only as a last resort and whenever possible try to defuse things instead.
