My grandmother became a barber so that she would never have to work for white people. She knew she’d hit somebody like Ms. Sophia (Oprah Winfrey) in The Color Purple and end up in jail. She also refused to shop on stores on “maid’s day” or let her children go to special events like “colored day” during the Texas State Fair. Aside from the Catholic school she sent her children to, she figured out how to avoid white people on a daily basis.

Wow. That makes me sad. What a sucky existence.
