I wish someone had started a small “Write-in Obama” campaign…it would have been fun seeing Obama come in the top 5 in the straw poll.

Loons and scoundrels that may as well have convinced enough people to get them into the highest office in the land.

So, a politician makes promises, a leader gets results? So, how’s that supposed to work when you’re a candidate for a job, as opposed to the guy in office? All you can do is make promises, unless I’m missing something here…

It’s Iowa…they think that’s a great (new) phrase. And to think Sarah Palin was pulling her bus slowly out of the state today because, she says, she “doesn’t want to step on anyone’s toes.” Obvious grifter gets obvious.

FIfty percent of pregnancies in the United States are unintended and 40% of these end in abortion (it works out to 22% of pregnancies resulting in abortion). If candidates were serious about preventing abortion they wold talk about the data from 2006, which shows in that year publicly funded family planning services helped almost 2 million women avoid an unintended pregnancy by giving them access to affordable contraception, preventing 810,000 abortions.

Sarah Palin ‘Surprised’ by Rick Perry’s Decision to Run for President

Sarah Palin, the former governor of Alaska who has not officially entered the 2012 Republican Presidential race, said she was “surprised” by Texas Governor Rick Perry’s decision to run.

“I was quite sure he wasn’t going to run because he was quite adamant about it about four months ago,” Palin told reporters. “So it surprised me. Evidently, he evolved in his thinking.”

That’s probably because you deal in reality while they deal in some badly-remembered version of ‘Red Dawn.’

I recall a college friend, who said once, to me and another young woman, that she didn’t like a guy we knew from our fencing club, “Because he looks like a bandit.”

I, or the other woman, I can’t recall, said something about how that made him sexy.

Turned out the boat she and her folks had escaped Vietnam on was boarded by pirates. She did not think raiders were sexy, cool, or ‘a little dangerous’. And that aura, around anyone, made her intensely suspicious of him, while we American-born girls thought it was supercool.

In 1861, a little more then 150 years ago, the first shots of the Civil War, began in Charleston, South Carolina as the Confederacy opened fire on US troops defending Fort Sumter.

Why did Texas Governor Rick Perry choose this town, half a continent away from Texas, to declare his candidacy for the Republican nomination for president of the United States?

It was DESPERATELY important that I create a new system that would work.

I began my reorganization of the system by actually creating a document showing the current system, and requesting comments from my boss about what parts she had found problematic. I got a short note back telling me that the ‘new system’ was terrific. Way to go. And it didn’t get better after that.”

For example, here in Florida, Rick Scott is trying to be “Perry-esque” and is being hammered for it in the polls, even amongst conservative leaning independents and Republicans.

Scott is being hammered, yet Obama has fairly dismal approval ratings in the state.

Because Americans aren’t the sharpest tool in the shed and sometimes, every 4 years, they vote for crazy people like these and one of them may actually stand the chance of becoming the POTUS.

Yep…MSNBC was saying that if Ron Paul wins, that it basically makes the straw poll worthless. If T-Paw wins, it’s important to his campaign. If Bachmann wins, it’s expected to give her a boost. If Perry wins, it means he’s the front runner.

Funny how a result can determine the validity of a poll.

re: #16 ralphieboy

Count on gasoline prices to rise sharply next summer, peaking in late October/early November, accompanied by a lot of rhetoric about how Obama is not willing to do enough to bring prices down by developing more domestic sources.

Now why would that be? Gasoline prices figure to rise right along with inflation. Do you expect rapid inflation? And if so, would that have anything to do with Obama’s policies, or would it be just an accident of history?

Do you expect a war in the Middle East? If so, would it be the Republicans who started it? Or Muslims out to get Obama because he’s so islamophobic? Or Jews out to get Obama because they’re all Republicans don’t you know?

Do you expect a conspiracy among refiners? Higher gasoline prices not accompanied by higher crude prices? You do realize that that’s a conspiracy theory?

Do you expect an uptick in travel during September and October? That’s not exactly vacation months.

Your prediction stands little chance of coming true, and if it did happen, it wouldn’t be because of any of the above.

The song choice may be an attempt to appeal to younger voters:

The group has an uncommon youth demographic (18–25) for country music (where the average listener is 44 years old[citation needed]). In September 2007, Weekly Reader Research (Weekly Reader being a children’s general-interest magazine) conducted a poll of more than 2,000 children and Rascal Flatts ranked as the sixth-most-popular act among ages 10–12.[13]

My grandmother became a barber so that she would never have to work for white people. She knew she’d hit somebody like Ms. Sophia (Oprah Winfrey) in The Color Purple and end up in jail. She also refused to shop on stores on “maid’s day” or let her children go to special events like “colored day” during the Texas State Fair. Aside from the Catholic school she sent her children to, she figured out how to avoid white people on a daily basis.

Wow. That makes me sad. What a sucky existence.

I don’t know. I think these dorks are doing it again…

Rascal Flatts’ Anthem for Same-Sex Loving

Country music isn’t just full of homophobes crooning to their trucks! And the list of exceptions isn’t only narrowed down to trans-loving Dolly Parton! Rascal Flatts, which sometimes straddles the line between country and pop, is out with a new track called “Love Who You Love,” and if you want to think it’s an ode to gay marriage, then have at it. Indeed, they’re fine with you thinking that way…

Maybe this isn’t really gin. It says gin on the bottle, but it smells like juniper berries, vanilla ice cream, and coconut. It’s called New Amsterdamn, and I only bought it to make the sangria (Madrid style). But I had a little left over and figured I’d give it a try with a little fresh lemon.

Passing is an interesting phenomena, but it’s amazing how much it didn’t happen. I think because you basically had to go into the witness protection program. No contact with family could have been possible and always looking over your shoulder afraid someone would recognize you. Most people would never do that, no matter what the advantages would have been.

Yeah, San Francisco has some extremely notorious segregation history, as does Berkeley, Richmond, San Leandro and certainly further east. Lol I don’t even know if they took our applications, let alone considered us for teaching jobs.

The UC System still has remnants of the loyalty oath days. A lot of Jewish immigrants and people loyalty-oathed out of state and private colleges got hired to teach at our HBCUs.

[Link: www.pbs.org…]

Thus, in the 1930s and ’40s when Jewish refugee professors arrived at Southern Black Colleges, there was a history of overt empathy between Blacks and Jews, and the possibility of truly effective collaboration. Professor Ernst Borinski organized dinners at which Blacks and Whites would have to sit next to each other - a simple yet revolutionary act. Black students empathized with the cruelty these scholars had endured in Europe and trusted them more than other Whites. In fact, often Black students - as well as members of the Southern White community - saw these refugees as “some kind of colored folk.”

The unique relationship that developed between these teachers and their students was in some ways a microcosm of what was beginning to happen in other parts of the United States. The American Jewish Committee, the American Jewish Congress, and the Anti-Defamation League were central to the campaign against racial prejudice. Jews made substantial financial contributions to many civil rights organizations, including the NAACP, the Urban League, the Congress of Racial Equality, and the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. About 50 percent of the civil rights attorneys in the South during the 1960s were Jews, as were over 50 percent of the Whites who went to Mississippi in 1964 to challenge Jim Crow Laws.

That’s interesting. Yeah, I mean, the Birchers were convinced the blacks and the Jews were both fomenting Communism, so they got lumped in together in a lot of right-wing rhetoric.

A heartbreaking book to read is “When Harlem Was Jewish”. It’s about the turnover of Harlem from Jewish immigrants to black, and how some rabbis and Jewish leaders wanted to stay, to integrate, to teach the black community what they could and invest in it, and, unfortunately, the majority who said “property values are dropping, we’re outta here”. You can still see some remnants up in Harlem, but precious few.

It’s the city of Berkeley that’s liberal. The University is just another academic institution with the usual mix of people: well-intentioned, poorly socialized, badly dressed, sometimes pretentious, sometimes absolutely brilliant, terrible at administration. re: #511 Obdicut

A huge opportunity lost there.

Story of segregation. Every community has its jerks. As re: shutting out Jews, I see a lot of non-Jewish whites of that era (and also our current one in spots, cf. Anders) simply unable to compete, unless it’s a rigged game like that. Same for blacklists, and other places the US iterations of antisemitism pop up.

We can’t compete, so let’s legally and formally shut all others out, yet call ourselves everyone’s natural superiors. rotfl

Most songs used by the Republicans (and others) are properly purchased and licensed, it’s just the artists protesting against the use of it. In most cases, the politicians don’t actually have to stop using them.

That’s to the best of my knowledge.

Could be the bulk of them are properly licensed and paid for.

There are a few prominent exceptions, though: McCain’s use of Jackson Browne’s “Running on Empty,” Michelle Bachmann’s use of Petty’s “American Girl,” David Byrne sued Charlie Christ for use of a Talking Heads song, and Steve Miller forced Marco Rubio to stop using “Take the Money and Run.”

Nah, it’s a pattern. :-)

It was probably discussed a few hours ago, but Rick Perry officially announced today at the RedState gathering.

Here is a classic example of some theocratic misogeny from the comments over there:

gekster Saturday, August 13th at 2:56PM EDT (link)
When he announced, I said to my wife,
Look at the TV and see the next President of the United States.
She said,” Good, we need someone who believes in God. With out God, we are lost”.

She does get things right every now and then.
God Bless Rick Perry.

It’s the city of Berkeley that’s liberal. The University is just another academic institution with the usual mix of people: well-intentioned, poorly socialized, badly dressed, sometimes pretentious, sometimes absolutely brilliant, terrible at administration. I’ve been around in the academic world and Berkeley felt pretty much like everyplace else (though much less snooty than Harvard) until I had kids and became part of the larger community. Well, Liberty City Stories was a dismal failure. Poor graphics and no music worth hearing except for the classical music. Vice City Stories was good: Vic Vance was a different type of character than seen previously, the graphics were back up to par, and the 80’s music was good. GTA IV also had what it needed, with the right story, graphics and music.

For myself, I’m just trying to avoid any talking-head commentary on it. It reminds me of Precious, which I still haven’t seen for all the screaming, and probably won’t any time soon.

On that topic, one of my heroes Susie Bright had the most normal take on it of all, since it was her magazine that first published Sapphire, back during the time when noooobody would touch her stuff. I also did read Push when it came out. So this really struck me.

Something like that, yeah. I’m flexible with the body parts issue but yeah, the mix of brains, outlook, looks, “catch” to me.

Thanks…not bad Stanley, trying to get motivated but I just can’t… Good to see you too… I hope all is well!

All is great. I felt completely worked from my week of an office job, pitiful, to the point that I’m not DOING SHIT this weekend. Regroup, repair, have fun.

So, when is there an end to this torture? This goes on much longer, the UN will cite the GOP for torture in violation of the Geneva Conventions.

I’ve had to up my dosage of Diazepam just to counteract the effect.

I forgot to mention I am comparing using WIFI (connected to my cable line) on the phone (40 seconds), with 4g on the phone (about a quarter to half a second to finish loading). So it’s an apples to apples comparison in terms of OS/Browser.

But other sites load fast via WIFI. Weird.

Sometimes I have slow performance, but when looking at the bottom bar I see “waiting for ad something or other”.

Linda is perfect.

[Video]Perfect voice, perfect everything else.

She’s got a set of pipes on her…… that’s a great oldie but goodie written by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees.

I liked Linda’s foray into “new wave” with “Mad Love”…… here’s a song written by Dave Edmunds called “Girls Talk” off that album.

You should check out this punk rock band from LA, the Bronx, who ventured into Mariachi. Absolutely fabulous. Dying to see them live, the vocals and melody. Ooooh, so surprising.

[Link: www.thebronxxx.com…]

Thanks for the link. I didn’t realize they were from LA. Now it makes sense.

While, one of the arrested was a minor, the other was 26 year old Joshua Donald

EDL looks likely.

I remember that. We were talking about UC Berkeley, earlier…about 12-13 years ago, a friend of mine (about 10 years older than me) was finishing up her PhD. I’d go over to her house and we’d blast 70s Linda, drink a lot of beer, and talk about Rilke. lol those were days.

Rick Santorum on now, discussing why fourth place was really a resounding victory.

So now Bachmann won. Do we have to consider this the best outcome for the Demcratic party? I mean, God forbid (although Michele might disagree) if she’s the Tea party Trojan horse in the GOP, Obama will win the election with (and this is a cycling saying) with two fingers in his nose.

Coming back late after being out; I’m not flexible on the former, due to genetics I assume, but as to the rest, that’s normal.
