Is that Yahwehs? I never encountered anyone like that personally no. I have evangelical friends, Pentecostal, but religion rarely comes up.

My experience is akin to OhCrapIHaveACrushOnSarahPalin—Christian Zionists belonging to non-denominational churches—but on the internet. There’s a deep but very obliquely expressed contempt for Judaism as cultural/religious/ethnic complex that comes through, usually caged as “disappointment” or “concern.” Bascially, they want Jews to meet their expectations of what “Jewish” is, or at very least apologize for not living up to their standards (and killing Jesus).

One day we were standing at the elevator alone and I thought it was a perfect time to ask with no one around so i did! He explained his family was from Spain during the Inquisition and they converted to Catholicism, but kept the Jewish holidays in secret. Generations down the line, they still celebrate the holidays, eat Jewish foods, wear the Star, etc, but he said he was Catholic and goes to mass.

The Crypto-Jews of Spain were pretty bad-ass…they had that organization-plus-improvisation genius akin to the Underground Railroad (or ninjas!) for setting up a subtle system for communicating and gathering. A lot of them ended up in Acapulco, and later California and the US Southwest. There’s a really neat mystery novel called “The Lase Kabbalist of Lisbon” that’s about a murder among the Marranos.
