Here’s what happens:

May 2008: Cop beats motorist on video, keeps job.

That officer was not only NOT charged with a crime, he’s still on the job.

Interesting that there is nothing in either article saying something like “officials said they have tried to fire the officer for years but union officials prevented it”.

Are there bad cops in the world? You bet. My guess, unsupported by any evidence other than my own knowledge of that world from my lawyering days, is that in most cases the department closes ranks around the bad cop and enables his behavior. Because each of them has had a traffic stop where the driver they pulled over was mouthy, and they all have wanted to punch the guy out. I agree that isn’t right, but if you are going to blame unions for the existence and employment of all the bad cops in the world, I think you have got to do way better than random clips of police misbehavior.
