From the Townhall comments on the Buchanan piece… these should make it pretty clear exactly that fear, and a particular fear, is driving the “populists” such as Tea Partiers:

‘Americans of European origin’ are already a minority in my state, certainly in my zip code, and you know what? It may be the end of the world as these folks know it, but I feel fine.
