One Man’s comment on Letterman, Part 2:

Last night David Letterman gave an apology, and I believe an honest one, for his out of bounds shots at the Palin family. Good for him to own up to this, be a man about it, and put it behind him.

I have seen a lot of discussion over the last few days about why this was such a big deal. Well FWIW, here’s my thoughts on that issue:

For nearly 8 years the left wing media conducted a daily assault on President Bush and conservatives in general, trying to destroy them for political reasons. People in the entertainment field became open activists, and often turned their shows into vehicles for attacking anybody they politically disagree with. As time went by, the attacks went from political dissagreement to personal attacks. They of course did not bring the same criticism against their own side.

It got to the point where the left was making movies about assassinating President Bush (and try to imagine anybody doing the same thing now about President Obama). Think about that for a minute….you make movies fantasizing about killing the sitting President, and yet the left cheered themselves on.

So now the left owns the White House, The Senate and the House. Fine, they won that politically at the ballot box. so you’d think that the personal attacks would end. But no, the personal attacks continue on and continue to get worse. And like many things, they keep pushing the edge.

Finally, Letterman went over the edge and attacked family in a very mean, gratuitous, and vicious way. Even he realizes that now.

Make fun of Sarah Palin all you want, she’s a public official and it’s part of the deal. But leave the families alone.

I think quite a few people are fed up with the personal attacks and have started pushing back. To show you just a few examples of how one sided the attacks have been consider this:

1. Joe Biden, the current VP, has a very troubled family member but the media leaves that alone, and should. But if Biden was a Republican you know that family member would be crucified by the MSM and jerks like Letterman.

2. Various Kennedy family are also very troubled, but the only ones publicly mentioned are those in office, as it should be, or have committed crimes.

3. When someone on the left has health problems, about 90% of the comments on blogs like LGF are of the “best wishes” variety, and anybody saying negative comments are usually called out for it immediately. But when someone on the right has health problems, blogs like KOS and HuffPo have to shut down comments cause of the open cheering for the person to die as painfully as possible. Anybody remember the Tony Snow experience? Despicable.

Imagine making jokes about Mrs. Edwards cancer. Unthinkable and unacceptable. But I saw left wing blogs reporting on George Bush 41 parachute jumping and the general comment by the left was wishing that his parachute did not open. And when Mrs. Bush was in the hospital a while back, many of the same left wing sewers were rooting for her death.

You have left wing PR branches like the NYT openly lying to the public about Obama’s policies, yet you have left wing commentators like Letterman going after the families of Republicans. It has become so pervasive in the media that I think quite a few people have had their fill of it.

I think that what has happened is in the effort to destroy Bush and gain political power, the left (including activists like Letterman) lost all sense of fair play and boundaries. They gained encouragement from each other to go after anybody on the left, till it got to the point that they were going after family.

Whether or not Letterman was going after the 18 year old daughter or the 14 year old is not the point. The issue is he, and many on the left, think that going after family is acceptable. for people who talk so much about “tolerance” and “compassion”, they sure do not show much of that themselves.

This time it got so bad even NOW spoke up about it.
