He’s talking about hazing. He uses terms like “violation of the taboo” and “intended to strip away all niceties of conversation,” but what he really means is hazing. He thinks it builds “intimacy & cohesion” because that’s the effect hazing is intended to produce among young, predominately male, gang-mentality subcultures. The abuse is both part of the self-selection process, anybody who won’t put up with it opts out, and is the mechanism of brainwashing those who do into thinking they’re stronger for having allowed themselves to endure it.
That’s fucked up.
