How about prior to 2008?

If you go and look for data/graphs on consumer/private debt, you’ll find that said debt increased significantly until the recession began. Only in the past two years have Americans got their spending under control.

And that is one reason why the “recovery” is so slow paced - consumer purchases just aren’t what they used to be.

Which is good in the long run, though adjusting to the new normal takes a while.

Yes, probably closer to 2008. I was thinking of the housing bubble, which probably peaked around 2003-4 and the crash came after.
