I’m bringing this up again because it really bothers me. I don’t get how someone would have a problem with an artist doing a single work of art combining piss and the cross, yet be completely ok with the fact that MandyManner’s personal icon on a political website is Calvin pissing on the word Allah in Arabic.
Specifically, Dark Falcon, do you think what Mandy does is different, if so how, or do you consider her an asshole?

It’s not different at all. Actually, I would argue it is different in one sense: Serrano has the excuse of making art, (to whatever extent one finds that a mitigating factor I’ll leave to the side).

That icon is offensive and there is no excuse for finding it less offensive than the equivalent ones showing Calvin pissing on the name of Jesus or G-d.

Mind you, I’ll defend all three putative icons as fair comment and protected under free speech— that doesn’t mean I have to think they aren’t offensive, crude, vulgar, and serve no point other than to be inflammatory and offensive.

But I reserve my special ire not for the icons themselves or those using them, but for anyone who wants to pretend that the one Mandy uses is somehow ok yet there’s another standard when it’s G-d’s or Jesus’s name being pissed on.

For the record, I highly doubt that DF would endorse any of those double standards.
