Left and right aren’t simply scalar values, where if you go left enough you’re ‘progressive’. Progressivism is close to a counterpart to reactionarianism; Teddy Roosevelt was progressive.
It’s main coherent meaning is seeking reform of laws based on the idea that modernization has changed society and government; that, for example, the modern scale of capitalism has fundamentally changed the outputs of capitalism and its interaction with the political system.
I would submit that a Progressive during Teddy’s day is not the same as a Progressive is thought of and identified as in today’s world.
