It is often said that tackling the social issues of the day in a straight forward manner would have been far too taboo for a television series at the time, and that Serling used a Sci-Fi palette to paint such narratives in a way that bypassed those taboos.

I believe this to be true, and I believe it makes him twice the genius that people think him to be.
