Our team won….let’s attack the police!
Officers fire projectiles at Lakers fans after being attacked
One of the most dramatic clashes between Los Angeles police officers and unruly Lakers fans occurred at Figueroa Street and Venice Boulevard, prompting police to fire less-than-lethal rounds.
The officers arrived as revelers tried to overturn a city parking enforcement vehicle. The officers raised their rifles and fired the less-than-lethal rounds toward the crowd, some of whom had set fire to several orange cones.
On the LAPD’s tactical frequency, officers at the intersection were heard requesting permission to fire projectiles at a group of men throwing chunks of concrete at them. The permission was granted.
It’s unclear whether any officers or fans were hurt.
Witnesses said fans threw bottles at police officers and set several small fires in the area.
A few blocks away, crowds had broken display windows at several local businesses.
At least nine people were arrested, but that number is expected to grow.
Channel 7 just said there are reports of an officer down.

Can we just have a policy of shooting rioters ? I bet people would be afraid to riot if they got shot for doing it. I know that’s not a morally justifiable response except if lives were endangered and that was the only way to save someone. But this kind of pointless celebratory rioting ticks me off.

Ah, a prescient response! I just got the whole Twilight Zone series on DVD in the mail today. Rod Serling has shaped most of who I am to this day. And I love his Planet of the Apes analogy of the social crisis in his day.

Kent State. Boston Massacre. Unless rioters are torching inhabited structures or themselves using firearms, it’s a bad idea.
One man’s riot is another man’s demonstration, and any demonstration is vulnerable to the activities of provocateurs and hotheads. If rioters were summarily shot, a demonstration would be an all or nothing thing. The police would have to choose between shooting, or going over to the demonstrators and declaring revolution.
I know you didn’t mean it seriously, but I’ve seen a few demonstrations including one where the police got way out of hand. That one, it’s lucky nobody got killed.
The routine daily total of carbqs in France tops this incident by miles. And somehow France goes on.
Down the road, why not have good cameras and just film the riot. Then pick the rioters up later and fine them a hefty sum? How deflating!

What a grim and amazing film. My favorite thing is I don’t think the camera every stops focusing on Clive Owen. it’s all 100% in the moment, experiential. Tracking shots to die for. O_O
A little more steampunk than sci-fi, but The Prestige also comes to mind as a mindblowing flick.

I tell you, I was VERY skeptical, and fully prepared to hate it. Loved the movie - I actually gave a damn about the characters, and that almost never happens. ‘Course, the whole thing is character-driven - the sci-fi thing drops out of your mind pretty damned fast and you see a real human drama, albeit with some non-human characters.

Oddly enough, he informed a lot of my thinking as well. it’s odd that a sci-fi tv series in syndication should have such an effect - a tribute to the man’s genius, i suppose, but still.
In the same way, Star Wars’ dystopian retro-futurism informed my thinking about high-tech to a greater degree than did Star Trek, though I never missed an episode.

I think the Borg meme got away from the utopian future idea some. The utopian future was always commentary on the human condition—so many of the episodes focused on aliens displaying all too human failings.

The irony of Children of Men is that the film is a complete contradiction to the book The author meant it as a critique to a post-Christian society. Key themes were ignored. I still love the movie though. Yet it’s very weak compared to the original work.

Re: Star Trek, the original series and TNG certainly go heavy on the utopian aspect; likely an outgrowth of the times (late 60’s and mid/late 80’s) that they were produced in. (Gene Roddenberry was also an incredible optimist.) By contrast, DS9 is pretty damn dark in places, much like the decade (early/mid 90’s) and by that time Gene wasn’t around anymore to throw cheerfulness around. Not saying Rod wasn’t a more gifted muse into the often bankrupt nature of humanity, but both shows have played a decent role in shaping my thinking today; albeit for different reasons.

I heard that to be true. She was getting paid much less than her co-workers who were in similar supporting roles, and she just about walked out because of such inequity. As I’ve heard it, MLK urged her to stay on as she was the only black woman on TV at the time that was acting in a positive role, i.e. not that of a hooker or junkie.

Yep. Of course from the stand point of a warden and prison order it’s not something that should be condoned since that kind of behavior is unacceptable within the confines of a prison. His killer, Christopher Scarver, was serving life for shooting Steve Lohman in the head or:
On 1 June 1990, he went to the training program office, expecting to find only Feyen there, but saw Steve Lohman, a program worker. He ordered Lohman at gunpoint to give him his money. When he received only $15, Scarver shot Lohman in the head. At the same time, he demanded money from Feyen. According to authorities, Scarver said, “Do you think I’m kidding Mr. Hitler? I need more money”. Scarver shot Lohman twice more before Feyen was able to run away after giving a check for $3,000 to Scarver. Scarver was convicted and sentenced to life in prison and sent to the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, Wisconsin in 1992. While imprisoned, he complained of experiencing messianic delusions, and was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

It looked like the driver finally gave up and talked to some of the punks and said something akin to “OK, have at it.” When he got out of the cab no one seemed to bother him and then they just swarmed all over the cab. Pretty dumb really. Arson can lead to very serious charges and prison time.

We are witnessing the sort of violence that breaks out after a team wins…I do have to ask what sort of rioting is going to break out in the wake of the next major terrorist attacl/man-made or major natural catastrophe that causes serious loss of life and/or disruption of public services in any urban area.
(The BP spill was a major man-made disaster that has at least had few fatalities and only a minor effect on public services and life in any major urban area)
I do truly fear that the militias and extremists might well see it as their moment to rise up and “defend their rights” and we will see scenes that make American cities look like something out of Mogadischu or Darfur.

OH! The Helsinki Hel-Looks site? It’s pretty cool, and yeah, it’s all about conjuring up cool looks out of second hand stores and DIY techniques, totally. There’s a term for taking clothes form 2nd hand stores and then changing them up, sewing them in weird ways, I can’t think of it, but it’s somewhere. There’s a LOT of the same vibe in Portland, everyone here is broke, so everyone gets their clothes from thrift stores.

Well, not really. It was outlawed nationwide some time ago, but in Utah - one of the few states to have it when the ban went into effect - prisoners convicted before the ban can still select it as an option; they’re sort of “grandfathered” in to the old system.
Not sure of the details, but apart from a very few death row inmates in Utah, it isn’t a choice.

I had a born-again Baptist girlfriend in the 8th grade who gave me a copy of the “666” (cannot recall the author), all about the Rapture, which predated the “Left Behind” series by decades.
That was when lots of young people were heavily into “Jesus Christ Superstar” and dabbling in Born-Againism, but reading that novel really helped put me off the topic entirely. Needless to stay, we did not stay together very long at all.
Just as a footnote, said Baptist girlfriend got knocked up in her senior year of High School and dropped out.

BP Oil Spill: Against Gov. Jindal’s Wishes, Crude-Sucking Barges Stopped by Coast Guard
Eight days ago, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal ordered barges to begin vacuuming crude oil out of his state’s oil-soaked waters. Today, against the governor’s wishes, those barges sat idle, even as more oil flowed toward the Louisiana shore.
“It’s the most frustrating thing,” the Republican governor said today in Buras, La. “Literally, yesterday morning we found out that they were halting all of these barges.”
Why did they stop them from cleaning the oil?
The Coast Guard needed to confirm that there were fire extinguishers and life vests on board, and then it had trouble contacting the people who built the barges.
Who’s running the show down there?

Gulf oil full of methane, adding new concerns
NEW ORLEANS – It is an overlooked danger in oil spill crisis: The crude gushing from the well contains vast amounts of natural gas that could pose a serious threat to the Gulf of Mexico’s fragile ecosystem.
The oil emanating from the seafloor contains about 40 percent methane, compared with about 5 percent found in typical oil deposits, said John Kessler, a Texas A&M University oceanographer who is studying the impact of methane from the spill.
That means huge quantities of methane have entered the Gulf, scientists say, potentially suffocating marine life and creating “dead zones” where oxygen is so depleted that nothing lives.
“This is the most vigorous methane eruption in modern human history,” Kessler said.
Very bad news.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows that 25% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as president. Forty-six percent (46%) Strongly Disapprove, giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -21 (see trends).
These results are based upon nightly telephone interviews and reported on a three-day rolling average basis. As a result, more than two-thirds of the interviews for today’s update were conducted after the president’s speech to the nation. Tomorrow’s update will be the first based entirely upon interviews conducted after the speech.
The Presidential Approval Index is calculated by subtracting the number who Strongly Disapprove from the number who Strongly Approve. It is updated daily at 9:30 a.m. Eastern (sign up for free daily e-mail update). Updates are also available on Twitter and Facebook.
Overall, 41% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president’s performance. That’s the lowest level of approval yet recorded for this president. Fifty-eight percent (58%) now disapprove.
Seventy-six percent (76%) of Democrats approve of the president’s performance. Eighty-five percent (85%) of Republicans disapprove along with 72% of unaffiliated voters.

NY pastor no longer approves sale to Muslim group
NEW YORK — The Staten Island pastor who signed off on a controversial plan to sell a former convent to the Muslim American Society has changed his mind.
St. Margaret Mary R.C. Church Pastor Keith Fennessy sent a letter to Archbishop Timothy Dolan saying “after careful reflection” he’s withdrawn his support for the convent sale. He also asked the New York Archdiocese to stop the deal from going forward.Archdiocese spokesman Joseph Zwilling said the parish trustees and a MAS attorney were informed of the letter on Thursday.
Zwilling said the pastor did not have the power to veto the sale. But he said the sale was not final until all approvals were met.
A MAS member said the organization would withhold comment until it had time to discuss the matter.

Alvin Greene Wants to Be Time’s “Man of the Year”
Since the South Carolina Democratic primary for the Senate took place earlier this month, it seemed like the only person not talking about Alvin Greene… was Alvin Greene. But Greene broke his silence to Time magazine reporter Michael Scherer in an interview released today.
“I am the best candidate for the United States Senate in South Carolina,” Greene told Scherer. “And I am also the best person to be Time magazine’s Man of the Year.”
Greene also discussed what he hopes to accomplish in his campaign. He said that he wants to focus on three things: jobs, education and “justice in the judicial system.” And according to Time, he wants to “curtail long jail sentences, for first-time, non violent crimes.”
He continued, “My campaign slogan is ‘Let’s Get South Carolina Back to Work.”

Now, I thought it was wrong when people blamed (and still blame, ugh) Bush for “Brownie’s” failings.
And I think it would be equally stupid to blame Obama for Thad Allen’s failings.
But Thad Allen sort of needs to get out of the way.
Before approving boom for Louisiana’s coast, the Coast Guard was waiting on NOAA projections to show the oil approaching the coast. The only problem with that was that NOAA’s projections were wrong, and oil was ALREADY at the coast.
It seems to me the smart thing would have been for them to, you know, get into a BOAT and use the information they saw with their own eyes rather than NOAA’s projections. They finally did that, at Jindal’s invitation, and released the boom.
I know everybody is really really busy. But if they didn’t know the oil was at the coast already, somebody’s busy with the wrong activities.

Well, BP is admitting that it never has blowout preventers certified. Ever. At any of its rigs.
It claims that the MMS doesn’t have a certification procedure - shifting the blame for that onto the government. But that doesn’t fly because the responsibility for compliance is with the company - not the MMS.
In other words, BP may have issues with BOPs at all of its rigs - and who knows whether any other oil companies are in compliance with the BOP certification either.
The regulation is on the books so everyone knows its there - and responsibility lies with the companies to meet the requirements.
In other words, this isn’t about the lack of regulation (the regs are there) - it’s about compliance and enforcement.

It claims that the MMS doesn’t have a certification procedure - shifting the blame for that onto the government. But that doesn’t fly because the responsibility for compliance is with the company - not the MMS.
In other words, BP may have issues with BOPs at all of its rigs - and who knows whether any other oil companies are in compliance with the BOP certification either.
The regulation is on the books so everyone knows its there - and responsibility lies with the companies to meet the requirements.
In other words, this isn’t about the lack of regulation (the regs are there) - it’s about compliance and enforcement.
Ayep. Once again, it’s not an “there outta be a law” situation, because there’s plenty of regs on the books that, properly enforced, would have prevented or at least limited the damage from this. But that’s not going to stop efforts to draw even more restrictive and complicated regs to give the appearance of “doing something.”

Dead sperm whale found south of rig
A SHIP has discovered the first dead sperm whale in the Gulf of Mexico since the BP oil blowout, but scientists say the whale is too badly decomposed to be able to determine whether oil was the cause of its death.
The whale’s body was found on Tuesday 124 kilometres south of the spill by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ship Pisces.
Researchers were trying to determine whether it drifted after dying from oil-contaminated waters.

Heads Found in 3 Boxes Set for Flight
A Southwest Airlines cargo worker was awestruck when he opened three suspicious looking boxes last week and found forty five human heads bound for a med lab in Fort Worth. The heads were for the training purposes of neurosurgeons.
This is something one cargo employee doesn’t get to see on a regular basis in the course of duty.
Body parts needed for medical purposes are generally shipped by air. But the packages meant for Fort Worth were not properly labeled and the Airline authority alerted the local authorities and the Federal Aviation Administration.

I saw that too often when I was working at Quiznos, particularly during the lunch rush, when one go-fer would be sent out to get half the office lunch, but then would need to spend 5 minutes per person getting their order exactly right. The ones that aggravated the frak outta me were the ones who waited until they got to the store to call up their buddies and ask them what they wanted. And the whole time, I’ve got this fake smile plastered on my face while I want to vault the sneeze guard plexiglass and beat them unconscious.

I don’t know how they go about it. I’m a sub-contractor. I work with a group of contractors but get paid by the company that hired me. I guess salaries are based on what the government pays the contractors. With no expectations of a promotion or raise, I do the bare minimum. Most of the time.
The Metro fares are going to be raised again this month, and it’s the biggest fare hike in their history. I’m going to email the HR guy about this and ask if those of us who rely on Metro to commute can expect a cost of living allowance.

Hey Mandy. We were chatting the other day about my sister. Since then a major thing has been put together by the rest of the family. Like a puzzle the real picture is dropping into place. It’s looking like she has a problem with codiene abuse and has likely been going on for very long time. Knowing this explains so much, the mental health issues and the physical health issues. After looking up the long term symptoms of what overuse does it fits her physical ailments to a tee. So this is good in terms of getting to the cruz of the problems but not so good as now we’re dealing with someone who has become a master at hiding it and is in absolute denial about it.
We’re all meeting with a family support counsellor to try to figure out how to tackle this mess.

BP does have other issues, guaranteed
However:
The BOP’s are actually the least of their problems, even though they are trying to put the blame on the failed BOP’s.
Their biggest problem, which they are trying to minimize, is their decision making process.
In yesterday’s hearing, they were not asked specifically about the results of the negative test. It was sort of glossed over, and Hayward’s answer was a bit of a “well, there may have been an issue interpreting one of the test results”.
This was the BIGGEST test result they should have paid attention to, and they ignored it, the test clearly showed a cement fail.
They also ignored other standard warning signs, which usually result in using mud to push the stuff back INTO the formation and holding it there to avoid a blowout. BP did not do this; instead, they started displacing the heavier mud with LIGHTER seawater.
There’s also the issue of the cement itself - BP chose a type of gas-infused cement that added gas to the pipeline.
They are now trying to write the reports of their own investigation to show themselves in the best light. The answers to all the questions Mr. Hayward did not know, are known by somebody. They know exactly what happened.

Lawhawk - back on MAY 12, here is what my husband wrote to me in an e-mail;
BP is going to blame Cameron’s BOPS owned by Transocean for everything. In other words despite all the dumbass decisions they made the blowout would have not happened if the BOPs worked.
He predicted what BP was going to try to do. It had little to do with the BOP’s - even if they had worked, BP had been making one bad decision after another, and no on relies on the BOP’s to save the well - they rely on doing the job right to begin with, and paying attention to test results and warning signs.

Only customer service job I’ve ever enjoyed was grocery store cashier. I was really happy there. Had my own regulars, it was great.

According to the news this morning, there was a policeman who had his nose broken from a bottle thrown at him, and at least one person was beat unconscious.
This makes me wonder if the police can be held liable for NOT using deadly force when it was appropriate to do so. It seems to me that these cops were trying to avoid deadly force at all costs, even if it may have been justified and appropriate
If I were being beaten unconscious and the police were standing around not trying to take control of the situation with lethal weapons drawn, I’d be pretty pissed….

Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said the U.S. may soon face higher borrowing costs on its swelling debt and called for a “tectonic shift” in fiscal policy to contain borrowing.

Only customer service job I’ve ever enjoyed was grocery store cashier. I was really happy there. Had my own regulars, it was great.
I been doing the supermarket cashier bit for going on three month now, and I would say 95 percent of my customers are as nice to me as I am to them. But I do have a small share of customers who will spend the entire checkout on the cellphone, or roaming around the check stand area no paying attention to my few simple service questions, or act like they don’t even want my help and why should they have to be doing sometime as trivial as buying groceries.
Other than that, I agree, the quality of customer I get at the grocery store seems to be good… then again, this is one of the few retail jobs I have worked in my life, so I don’t have a lot of history to go on.
The cell phone thing bothers me the most. It’s like the ultimate “Me special, you cashier, servant, scum, my slave” attitude.

Thre was a time when trickle-down economics seemed to work, and the money that investors saved in taxes got reinvested to create jobs.
But that was in a less global world than we have now. Now the money gets reinvested, but not in the US and not to create jobs here.

There are common-sense restrictions everywhere on cell phone use. Check out your doctor’s office, other where a business or institution feels its in their best interest to reduce distraction to others. Notices are up all over the place.
What you want is to be able to make your own personal decision as to where calls should be jammed, with no notice to anyone around you, and you take pleasure in their confusion.

Just to clarify - such devices are strictly illegal in all parts of the United States, where it is against the law to interfere with radio transmissions in any way. Federal law, administered by the FCC.

He works aboard the Ocean Monarch, which was idled along with 32 other oil rigs when the Obama administration ordered a six-month moratorium on all deepwater drilling after the April 20 Deepwater Horizon disaster. The rig’s owner is now seeking customers in other parts of the world. If the rig moves, Mr. Brown and his fellow motormen, roughnecks and roustabouts will be left behind, jobless, with few alternatives that would pay anything close to the $3,500 to $4,000 a month typical for such jobs.

Speaking of noise: I bought the Bose® QuietComfort® 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling® Headphones yesterday and they are expensive yet fantastic. They cut most noise by 50-75% and are very comfortable to wear. I wore them for maybe hours yesterday out in the garden with no discomfort at all. They also make nice ear warmers in the chilly June weather here.
A big plus for me is that the chord is not hardwired into the headphones. it’s a cable with a plug. The cable is always the first thing to give out on headphones but this way you can just plug in a new cable instead of taking them apart and soldering in a new cable.
I never realized how much traffic and airplane noise i get in my yard until yesterday. I’d just become used to it. It’s very to to be able to escape.

Wow! I never expected this sort of violent opposition to fighting technology with technology.
When I’m in a restaurant or an airport lounge and I can barely hear myself think because of someone yelling into his cell phone, it’s a very uncomfortable situation. Especially in the airport lounge “quiet area” where signs are posted to discourage cell phone use… And in this day and age, confronting strangers directly isn’t always the best idea.
The first problem is that it is illegal. This blog has people who don’t like us. One of them, an ex-lizard known as ‘Rodan’ has a blog called “The Diary of Daedalus” where he posts what he feels are ‘bad posts’ from LGF. Most of these are utterly acceptable posts that he is fact worked up over due to his hate, but a post like yours might well catch his attention and be used to illustrate “Charles tolerating illegal actions”. Second is that criminals use cell phone jammers to keep their victims from calling for help and by carrying a jammer you may be helping them.

Shouldn’t I defend Israel when I believe much of the anti-Israel invective is actually a manifestation of anti-Semitism, which is rising throughout the world?

I’m pretty sure we’re headed towards something like that. Right now she has no clue that we’ve figured out what’s really going on. It’s also serious enough that something drastic has to be done. She’s literally killing herself right now. All her health symptoms are showing signs of stomach, kidney and liver damage which are key consequences of long term overuse of the stuff. The whole thing really sucks because it’s really easy to hide because you can get it over the counter so it’s not like she had to spend a lot of time hunting for prescriptions. My Dad’s also missing some of his antidepressant medication to the point where he now has to go to the doctor to get his scripts renewed early and explain why he ran out way before his renewal time. He feels awful for not figuring it out sooner.

One morning, I went over to feed the brood and the cat had left a present at the door. It was exactly half a squirrel with the spine sticking straight out from the bottom. Back feet splayed out. This is very common. My youngest brother is in the same boat, and managed to keep it hidden, well, from my parents who I think were simply in denial about him, though the rest of us had it figured out pretty quickly.

I think it’s true, although the story first came out of the Enquirer so who knows.
I used to ride with the Ladies of Harley (part of the Harley Owner’s Group) and we had a woman who underwent gender reassignment surgery…. er a man to a woman. She was nice enough but sort of odd and didn’t seem quite to fit in with either the women or the men. Certainly not the men, when we would ride with the big group. She was huge, like 6’3”, husky, with breasts. Kind of bizarre.
She was a ride captain, 1 of 4 experienced riders, 2 who rode in front and set the pace, and 2 who rode in the back in case anyone broke down. The guys would fight with her all the time.

Our family cat when I was growing up had a belled collar. Didn’t work that well since the cat could walk across the yard without ringing to get into the hedge. And then it ambushed from there apparently since the back porch usually had a “donation”* on it in the morning. That feline was a 1st class hunter and anytime we moved the local small rodent and bird population gene pool got a cleaning.

Some critters are extremely hard to trap and can do a lot of damage to people and property before they’re trapped.
I had trouble with feral pigs with last summer. The cops tried to trap them but it didn’t work. I was fine with the cops shooting them because they were wrecking my yard and garden and were a danger to pets and people. (I didn’t even try to shoot them myself because, well, they were wild and dangerous.)
I have deer problems. The bastards can eat 4 months of hard work in my garden in one night.

Indeed, well I have no problem with mine hunting mice. It’s the birds that’s the problem. I think the bell helps to cut down some, but they still get a few.
Reminds me, the other day I saw a bird chase a squirrel out of tree and down the street. Would have made a hilarious video.

I heard on a garden call in show that one of the best thing for squirrels is to get a few of those realistic looking rubber snakes and put them by the plants. Also a plastic owl from a sporting goods store is supposed to work as well.

Can’t answer that one for sure since I’ve never tried it specifically for squirrels. Since marigolds are so repellent to a number of other mammals, it would be worth a try. They’re inexpensive and pretty, so why not?

Probably just easier to urinate around the garden. All human hair does is emit human scent that may deter critters who will avoid those areas. Depending on how urban the area is, most critters are used to human scent and it won’t be that effective.

I’m sure they’re feeling lots of stuff right now so yeah the counsellor should help. It’s not a nice thing to figure out. I talked with Mom this am and she’s actually feeling more relieved then anything. Sounds weird but now, knowing what’s going on at the root of everything explains so much, plus it’s becoming so much more clear what we’re dealing with. Not that dealing with it isn’t going to difficult but now at least we know more of the truth.

Ace, you missed the whole point of what I was saying. I eat meat. I don’t fault anyone else for doing the same. I just feel that making a sport out of killing a creature, experiencing pleasure at it’s death or taking pride in one’s skill at killing, is a rather sadistic thing to do. Nuff said. My other sister is doing that right now. 20/20 hindsight and all that. More then anything though it’s well that comment makes more sense now, now I know why she did that. We have peacocks in the neighborhood. I keep meaning to post some pics on the Pages. Anyway, my one little kitty hunter lovvves to stalk those big tails which is really stupid because the birds are pretty big. At least, they’d make a good Tgiving dinner. But she can’t help herself. So far, no calamities.

Thanks. I know it’s going to be really hard. Like my Mom though I’m feeling better about it all then I did a few days ago. My frustration and anger has gone down a heck of lot and now it’s basically getting down to contacting resources to help get her help for the real problems, not just the ones that we thought she had.

I will suggest that the intent of the hunting makes a big difference in the degree of responsibility the hunter assumes. If one is hunting out of necessity for food, or even one who is a dedicated hunter who does it with a reverence for the life being taken, the hunting will be considerably more responsible. The drunk who’s out there with a gun looking for kicks by killing something, taking glee in an animal’s suffering is the one who will wound an animal and not track it, etc.

Your comment that the killing was fun actually started this subthread. I have run across people who go out to kill something because they enjoy the rush of power. There is something atavistic and in my mind vile about that attitude.
I have killed to put food on the table because I like venison, killed gophers because the population was out of control, killed skunks to reduce the chance of rabies, killed a cat because it became an unpredictable danger, killed animals in pain, and even took some pride in my marksmanship, but have never killed just to see something die or to feel a power rush.

Marigolds aren’t nearly as good a deterrent as you think. I don’t have a deer problem, but a rabbit problem, and so far it looks like planting lavender in conjunction with using a critter repellent (deerout brand) is doing the trick.

This is absolutely true. When a canine, usually coyotes, figures this out and gets a taste for domestic livestock, the approach is to remove that animal, not ALL of them.
