I think you’re making a category error. “Hamas hardliners” and Hamas don’t necessarily have identical interests. Hamas hardliners might benefit within the organization even if the organization, as a whole, has suffered a defeat. I don’t say that’s the case, just that the headline isn’t necessarily incoherent.

There’s no category error here. The Associated Press always uses this ridiculous line of argument, for every single conflict, and it’s extremely easy to find more examples.
