I should have qualified my statement that they were mediocre compared to their effectiveness vs earlier variants. Omicron is far more likely than earlier variants to cause breakthrough infections among the vaccinated and previously infected.

my understanding from some recent article was that the booster bumped resistance to omicron back up to what it was against covid after the second shot, by increasing antibodies something like 24 fold over the two shot folks who weren’t boosted six months out. Even my lady barber, who had to skip the booster on doctor’s orders after the second dose caused her some pretty nasty heart palpitations, go the omicron variant but found it was just several days of feeling like she had a sinus infection that wasn’t really all that terrible. I felt very bad for her, because as right-wing as everybody in that shop is, she was trying to do the right thing and the vaccine did apparently mess with her, but at least that second shot gave her some protection that likely paid off in the end.
