There have been time periods where mainstream liberals were highly progressive— like under FDR. But it’s always been a subset.

The health care debate showed this, I think, better than most; the solutions adopted which were tolerable to the majority of Democrats were very, very insufficient to please progressives.

Quite honestly, I think all of the Democrats were disappointed in what healthcare reform turned out to be. We all felt it was watered down and no one was completely happy with what we got.

I see things very differently, apparently. I don’t see the division. I think for the vast majority, we’re on the same page, not counting the very fringes, but I don’t really see them as useful contributors anyway.
