The definition of “plausible:” seeming reasonable or probable.

according to the best scientific opinions available in the 16th century it was “plausible” that maggots self-generated from piles of rotting meat. the fact that it was “plausible” in the absence of scientific evidence didn’t make it true, simply … plausible.
