We (i.e. Americans) often underestimate or are totally unaware of the essential role that Russia played in Hitler’s defeat.

My mother was with a group of London-based WAC’s that were sent to Normandy in August of 1944. They camped in the fields until they were ultimately transferred to Paris.

I think that it was intentionally played down during the Cold War and we never really recovered from it. Face it, neither side could have won without the other, but at any given time, the overwhelming bulk of Axis forces (and resulting combat losses) were on the Eastern front
