OK…I call the diacritics in, for example, Curação “cedilla” and “tilde” respectively, but I know neither term is Portuguese. What should I call them?
Interestingly, cedilla is a Spanish word .
The diacritical mark is no longer used in modern Spanish: all words using “ç” have replaced that letter with “z.”
For example: Historic Spanish començar > modern Spanish comenzar (to begin)
