Interestingly, cedilla is a Spanish word .

The diacritical mark is no longer used in modern Spanish: all words using “ç” have replaced that letter with “z.”

For example: Historic Spanish començar > modern Spanish comenzar (to begin)

As you say, that’s what they’re called in Spanish. I just wondered what to call them in Portuguese, which still uses the “cedilla” (cedilha, maybe?) and uses the “tilde” to mark nasalized vowels.
