That’s the same supposed legal principle underlying various P2P file-sharing networks. However, recently, several lawsuits have turned out badly for P2P advocates, with judges ruling that the “sharing” rationale isn’t valid.
We shall see how things turn out in this realm. But I’m surprised the owner of that site hasn’t been sued yet…
If you want to avoid the whole mess (as i do), here are some sources for free-to-keep books online, the majority both OOP and old enough that repeated searches have shown no evidence of any copyrights still extant or valid;
