Kindle 2 Price Drop

Technology • Views: 3,013

External ImageIf you were intrigued by Amazon’s Kindle e-book reader but thought it was a bit expensive, there’s good news today as Amazon drops the price by $60 on the Kindle 2, to below $300. Amazon says it’s because they’re manufacturing a larger volume of the devices, decreasing the cost.

The price of the larger Kindle DX (available in 3 to 5 weeks) will stay the same: $489.

Note: If you buy a Kindle by clicking a link at LGF you help support us; we get a small piece of the purchase price as part of the Amazon Associates program. (But I’d recommend this wonderful gadget even if that weren’t so.)

Well, considering I got a Sony Reader for free from my sister, I think I’m set. But it seems the hubby and I are always wanting to use it. It’s quite popular, so I could see getting a second one.

I found out the other day that Amazon offers many non-copyright classics for free. That’s a big incentive for me, in addition to the fact that most newer books are cheaper for Kindle than in hardcover.

They’ve dropped the price by a sixth, but it’s still more than I can justify.

Alas, that’s the one downside on the Sony Reader. Their books are not, I think, cheaper than their printed cousins.

I’d be more concerned about dropping a Kindle than dropping a book. If you drop a kindle, you’ve got a splintered kindle. Just how rugged are they? A book you can simply pick back up and resume reading. Broken kindle? You’re out the $$$.

The whole kindle concept is wonderful especially if we can download copyright-free books without charge (or with a nominal fee…) Kind of like what they are doing at google books I think. Which is a great resource for old, out of print books.

I actually bought a protective case for my Reader, and I’ve been very satisfied with it. What I’ve done is put the NIV Bible on it. Much lighter than paper one, and much easier to find stuff when I’m at church!

Correct. And I have a slew of pocket devices that can read those text files, which is the format of most of these free books. A Sony Mylo, a cheap 60 dollar Chinese personal video player, a PSP, a 10 year old Casio E115 and my list could go on.

Leaders of developing nations shun plan to cut greenhouse gases in half

The world’s biggest polluters failed to reach an agreement today on a plan to cut greenhouse-gas emissions in half by 2050, after developing nations decided not to sign on to the idea during an international summit here.

Leaders of the Group of 8 industrial nations said they would issue a statement committing to the standard later today, pledging to cut overall emissions by 50% by the middle of the century and reducing those of industrialized nations by 80%.

But leaders of developing nations balked at the plan, according to sources who were present for the talks but asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to speak for the group.

The major economies forum, which includes the world’s leading greenhouse-gas emitters, will not issue such a joint declaration after its meeting Thursday, White House officials confirmed.

Killgore Trout -

After seeing that one, my “Joisey Eagle” looks tame. Still think that a “Netbook” is the natural format for a reader once someone puts together a proper “App” and the publishers/bookstores get it together on copyrights/royalties. More power to Amazon anyway for helping to get “e-books” accepted.

Nothing wrong with that, and it’s a great device, but just don’t want to shell that out.

For what is essentially an OS, a small flash drive, and an LCD screen, it should be sub-$100 for me to even consider.

…but that’s me.

According to the returns page, if you return the Kindle within 30 days they offer a full refund. After 30 days, it’s a partial refund. I’d email Customer Service & if you’re prepared to return it, and buy a new one, I bet you get the refund…..

If the order hasn’t been fulfilled yet, you’d probably get the new price automatically. That happened with an item I had on backorder at Land’s End.

There are some excellent books on these too.

Excellent? Why most, if not all, of the works of the immortal Bard of Avon are there!
To download them all, or not to download them all
That is the question

And there are works of lesser mortals, such as Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and many, many more.

One cool feature of the DX (and perhaps all models) is the artwork that is displayed when it’s in sleep mode. Old-fashioned pen-and-ink drawings or engravings of authors such as Steinbeck, Twain, Jules Verne, Agatha Christie, Dumas, Emily Dickinson and Virginia Woolf.

It goes everywhere with me, I have about 10 books on it right now waiting to be read, and more on my amazon “save for later” list. The type size is adjustable for those of us with older eyes; you can take it anywhere and read it and the pages aren’t flopping or blowing on top of the page you’re reading; it’s light; when you finish one book, the next one is RIGHT THERE ready for you to begin. I can’t tell you how much I have enjoyed my kindle. Get it.

To each according to his ability to work the system.
Compassion without coercion is useless.
Never ask when you can use the government to take.
The vast majority of the rich in this galaxy are undertaxed.
All we want is what’s yours.
Monopoly is evil unless the government runs it.
Class envy makes a good running mate.

When in doubt, throw a friend under the bus.
Never allow others’ self-interest to stand in the way of your common good.
A liberal without guilt is no liberal at all.
When someone says, “I’m not a racist,” he’s lying.
A dead vote is just as good as a live one.
A good vote is worth casting twice.
Actual progress is not guaranteed.
Small print is the best invention since snake oil.
Entitlements and handouts will always overcome freedom and opportunity.
Integrity is no substitute for campaign cash.
A friend in need is a potential donor and land deal partner.

Beware of relatives giving speeches.
There’s nothing more dangerous than an honest political adviser.
The most beautiful thing about the environment is that you can turn it into an election issue.

We might as well have a King Canute Memorial Conference. Without technology to back up the goals there will be one of two results:

a. The effort will be abandoned when the costs in living standards become apparent.

b. As living standards decline, lots of people will die - of disease, of starvation, of exposure and “Plagues” of Biblical Proportions.

As for me, I’m for “do it all” - Conventional Petroleum, Cleaned Up Coal, Natural Gas, Bio-Fuel (Hopefully More Efficient than Corn Based Ethanol),
Wind (Put Some Windmills off my Coast and I’ll make them a Tourist Attraction! - Works for the Netherlands, Doesn’t It?), Hydro, Geothermal, Solar, Nuclear - Both Fission and Fusion. My policy would be to make “renewables” essentially a TAX FREE business for a period of at least Ten Years rather than strangle current energy sources with additional taxes.

Money taken as profit is immoral; money taken by government is the highest form of Lightworking.

Law makes everyone equal, but presidential pardons go to the highest bidder.

L’AQUILA, Italy — The world’s major industrial nations and newly emerging powers failed to agree Wednesday on specific cuts in heat-trapping gases by 2050, undercutting an effort to build a global consensusto fight climate change, according to people following the talks.

No, turn away from the dark side.

As Isaac Asimov once observed, a book is the most efficient data storage a retrieval device ever conceived. It requires no electricity, has only one type of moving part (the pages), is infinitely “addressable” (by turning same), and is remarkable pan-climatic. No, it won’t survive temperatures over 451 degrees Fahrenheit, but then you probably wouldn’t, either.

Plus, it requires only one skill to operate. It’s called “literacy”.

And of course, the knowledge of the classical Greek and Roman civilizations wasn’t preserved through the Dark Ages on Flash drives.

… More seriously, I am wondering about the staying power of this widget. You can’t read 9 track tapes anywhere much less 556BPI 7 track tapes. …

Within the last few years (not exactly sure how many), Fox News was doing a liveshot from the IRS Cincinnati processing center on April 15th. In the background was a whole bank of IBM 370 era magnetic tape units, all turning. They had to be 9 track units. So much for a modern, efficient government.

Wait! Who wants the IRS to be efficient?

171 3 wood  Wed, Jul 8, 2009 2:54:15pm

In market news today, things were fairly flat as the dow was up slightly and the S&P 500 down slightly.

Do not be surprised if you see the S&P take another drop and test the lows. Various technical support points were breached recently calling for another sell off.

In addition to the growing unemployment, you also have to take into account the under employed and the early retired. More and more folks I know in their 50’s are being handed early retirement buyouts and encouraged to take them. A friend of mine had that happen just yesterday. Of course folks who are retired, voluntarily or otherwise, do not show up on the unemployment roles.

Bad news for commercial real estate:

Distressed Commercial Property in U.S. Doubles to $108 Billion

Commercial properties in the U.S. valued at more than $108 billion are now in default, foreclosure or bankruptcy, almost double than at the start of the year, Real Capital Analytics Inc. said.

There were 5,315 buildings in financial distress at the end of June, the New York-based real estate research firm said in a report issued today. That’s more than twice the number of troubled properties at the end of 2008.

“We are writing from the Amazon Associates Program to notify you that your Associates account has been closed as of June 26, 2009. This is a direct result of the unconstitutional tax collection scheme expected to be passed any day now by the North Carolina state legislature (the General Assembly) and signed by the governor. As a result, we will no longer pay any referral fees for customers referred to Amazon.com or Endless.com after June 26. We were forced to take this unfortunate action in anticipation of actual enactment because of uncertainties surrounding the legislation’s effective date.”

Former Met and Philly broke:

Dykstra files for Chapter 11

Lenny Dykstra, the former star center fielder for the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The 46-year-old has no more than $50,000 of assets and between $10 million and $50 million of liabilities, according to a petition filed Tuesday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Central District of California.

Dykstra’s filing comes in the wake of more than 20 lawsuits he faces tied to his activities as a financial entrepreneur, including The Players Club, a glossy magazine for athletes he had helped launch in 2008.

According to an April article on ESPN.com, Dykstra put his net worth at $60 million, and also owned a black Rolls Royce Phantom and Gulfstream II jet.

Known as “Nails” and “The Dude,” Dykstra played for 12 years with the Mets and the Phillies before retiring in 1996 with a lifetime .285 batting average, 81 home runs, 404 runs batted in, and 285 stolen bases.

He helped the Mets win the World Series in 1986, and as a Phillie was the National League runner-up to Barry Bonds in MVP voting in 1993. The Phillies lost the World Series that year.

Walter Hackett, a lawyer for Dykstra, said the event triggering the bankruptcy filing was a planned foreclosure sale of a southern California residence that Dykstra bought from hockey legend Wayne Gretzky for $17.5 million in 2007.

Maybe he can get a bail out from the White House.

Wintercat, they are searchable, you can write notes in the margins, and there is an automatic dictionary. Plus, there’s a text-to-speech feature that sounds like a real person (not a computer), at least the couple of times I tried it. For those with vision problems, the type can be enlarged to near headline-size.

Democrat Leader finds idea of reading a bill before a vote laughable

“If every member pledged to not vote for it if they hadn’t read it in its entirety, I think we would have very few votes,” Hoyer told CNSNews.com at his regular weekly news conference.

Hoyer was responding to a question from CNSNews.com on whether he supported a pledge that asks members of the Congress to read the entire bill before voting on it and also make the full text of the bill available to the public for 72 hours before a vote.

In fact, Hoyer found the idea of the pledge humorous, laughing as he responded to the question. “I’m laughing because a) I don’t know how long this bill is going to be, but it’s going to be a very long bill,” he said.

Grab people at random off the street and you would get a better set of representatives than these corrupt arrogant bastards.

My price point on something like this is around a hundred bucks, tops. For the big one coming out in a few weeks.

I understand that Amazon has to rely on early adopters to recoup initial costs on this thing, but ultimately the device itself ought to be somewhere between free and cheap, with Amazon making it’s money off the nearly costless distribution of book content. Similar to cell phones, the device itself is a loss-leader for the wireless companies; they make all their money off the services the phone allows you access to.

I expect the Kindle to follow the same path, it if generates enough interest among early adopters willing to pay full price for it. I suspect that if it’s doing well in a year or two, the price for the device will drop sharply.

The RNC ought to be runnings ads of Laughing Hoyer in all media, with a subtitle/voiceover asking “Do you think it’s funny that a Congressional representative doesn’t read the bills they vote on?” It’s not to early to start laying a foundation for 2010’s contests, and Democratic arrogance and ignorance are as good a foundation as any. What’s needed is an environment pre-poisoned for anything the Democrats might say or do. “The Party that laughs at their constituents” works well in that regard.

Term limits are sorely needed. But that’s never going to happen. It’ll have to take place through voter-imposed term limits. There needs to be something placed in people’s minds that it is repellent for any politician to serve more than two terms in office, not matter what they say or do.

Sadly, neither side reads most bills, some over 1000 pages long. They claim that’s what the staffs do, giving them the highlights out of the 90 % of fine print. Before the GOP makes it a issue, they need to show they read all the bills before a vote. It may not be standard procedure to read all the bills, but it’s not a subject of humor either.

I should qualify that. Even though I grew up in Chicago, I abhor the cheating democrat way. Vote fraud should be punished severely because a vote stealer steals from every one of us. 10 years rotting in prison at a minimum. Make people think twice before they try it.
I don’t vote absentee for one thing. If the bastards are going to steal my vote, I want to make it hard on them and have them do it in my goddamn face.
Absentee voting is a way to abuse the vote. Just look at the Franken abortion up in Minnesota. It shouldn’t be too difficult to get off your ass and physically go and vote in person. If the fuckers are gonna steal the vote make them work for it.

I couldn’t agree with you more. But it doesn’t have to be the dim-bulb RNC that does it. Any concerned voter with the know-how can do it, too. And that puts the GOP on notice as well — and they need to be.

Actually, when I try carrying around 60 actual dead-tree books it doesn’t feel all that portable. ;D

E-readers are definitely different from the Segway. There are some bugs still to be worked out — like do you actually own the book after purchasing it? But e-readers are the wave of the future, IMO. I like my Kindle2 quite a bit.

It’s easy to criticize if you haven’t tried it. I thought I’d never get used to not having the feel of an actual book in my hands, but it was a snap. And changing the font size — a blessing for anyone who gets dry, tired eyes.

I’m not sure of the first part — it does have advantages for those who carry a lot of books around — but I agree with the rest. I’m a gadget-lover, so I drool over them … but I simply can’t justify the price of a reader and e-books that I probably won’t be able to use in a few years, as opposed to regular books that will remain usable for my entire lifetime.

I went through multi-obsoletion (new word, I think) with home video, from 8mm film through Betamax and VHS to DVD, and audio is worse. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m not going to pay more than a pittance for any media player/format combo that’s not likely to last for at least 25-50 years, so I’m pretty sure I’ll be sticking to hard-copy books that’ll be usable at least until I’m no longer room temperature.

1) “More portable.” Nope. The Kindle absolutely crushes traditional books when it comes to portability. You can have an entire library on your Kindle - thousands of books. Try carrying thousands of books around with you.

2) “More durable.” Possibly, but also much more limited.

3) “More affordable.” Actually, the Kindle versions of books are significantly less expensive. The savings from the books I’ve purchased have nearly paid for the Kindle reader already.

4) “Easy to read.” The Kindle’s e-ink display is very similar to a printed book, and you can change the type size to improve readability — which, last time I checked, traditional books couldn’t do.

re: #15 lawhawk

I’d be more concerned about dropping a Kindle than dropping a book. If you drop a kindle, you’ve got a splintered kindle. Just how rugged are they? A book you can simply pick back up and resume reading. Broken kindle? You’re out the $$$.

Sorry to post so late, but it’s worth it to purchase the cover. I don’t recall if it’s leather or faux leather, but it’s about $25-30 (or was when we bought the first Kindle) and it does help protect it, even from tumbles. If you’re going to spend the money for the Kindle, you might as well kick in the extra. I think it should be free, but that’s me!

My husband is an avid reader and has never been without a book in hand since he was a kid. The Kindle was the best gift he ever got. Now my only problem is meeting that same criteria on his next bday!
