Right now, NATO’s options for getting involved are largely limited to economic reprisals against Russia and materiel support to Ukraine. The treaties and agreements that we could cite as obligations to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty and its borders are the ones we’re also saying Moscow just ripped up and shat all over. We can’t cite something as both legally binding and as a dead letter.

Sure we can - we just say we still consider it legally binding, regardless of Russia’s actions and that Russia is acting in violation of international law as a rogue state.

That being said, devastating economic sanctions and weapons/materiel/insurgency training support to Ukraine are first and foremost.
