I wonder if any of the religious objected to his character. Or maybe they didn’t pick up on the potential interpretation of his whole role as ridicule of the concept of a benevolent god. Or maybe I’m the only one who saw his character that way.

No, i saw him as a post-modern Jove - toying with humans for his own unfathomable amusement, like the gods in the Iliad.
