I think its the really clever dogs who get freaked out by thunderstorms, because they cannot smell where its coming from, its too random, and they don’t know if they should defend the place against that.

For many other dogs, after the first time, its just another noise …

I think you’re right. This is the alpha, and he takes on the job of protecting the pack and the den. Since he doesn’t know what to do for a thunderstorm, he comes to the one he knows to outrank him to get assurance that someone is protecting the place.
(He’s also frightened of fireworks and coyotes; one howled when he was outside, and he ran to the door and whimpered.)
