As I understand the rambling dualing links, tree rings are the proxy. We want to know the temp, we can only measure tree rings, affected by temp (and rainfall, and whether another tree nearby grew and put it in the shade, and termites, and volcanoes.) An honest scientist can tease the truth out of vague and mischevious data. Maybe in the Tundra, it’s always moist, and you take the average of numerous trees, so pretty much the temperature is all that affects average tree ring size.
