I would imagine plantains are closer to indigenous species, but that’s just a guess. They sound like an example of what you describe. (They do get very sweet when fried.)

Now, just to add another twist, a friend of mine went to grad school with a woman from Uganda who thought American bananas were bland and boring. She explained that “In Uganda, Jesus has given us fifty different kinds of bananas.”
