I owe a lot of my success in college to a humble math teacher. He wrote original math works that got published, got astounding offers from big schools, yet taught a community college because he loved teaching, and not all the stuff that went with a big university. Yep, and “they” are generally the luddite-left and the jindal-right. They love to leave out the part about microscopic singularities only lasting for a microscopic amount of time: ~1 unit of plank time which is 5.34E-44 sec.
Yes, I read that months ago in the NYT (so it must be true!). Apparently we’d be more likely to raise up dinosaurs from ancient DNA than do any harm with this thing.
Can’t wait to see what it has to teach us.

Just about, but we have the old 17th and 18th century houses in New England.

re: #183 Bobblehead
That’s funny.
I have been intrigued by typographical errors nearly all my life,” Emory alumnus Max Hall writes in the preface to his new book, An Embarrassment of Misprints. “As a newspaper person, Washington information officer, book editor, and teacher of writing—and simply as a reader—I have seen plenty of mix-ups.”
What follows are some of those mix-ups, culled from An Embarrassment of Misprints:
* “In the spring of 1990 the United States Naval Academy presented 990 diplomas to its graduating class with `Naval’ spelled `Navel.’ A representative of the Academy told me the flawed documents arrived from the printer the day before the ceremony, and there was nothing to do but hand them out. A corrected version was later sent to each graduate.”
* “According to a history of the Washington Post, that paper once printed this headline on the front page of its first edition: FDR IN BED WITH COED. Actually President Roosevelt was in bed with a cold, as the story made clear. Chalmers Roberts, author of the history, wrote that this misprint probably occurred in 1940, and that the President phoned the paper and ordered a hundred copies to send to his friends. But Roosevelt didn’t get his copies, because the circulation department had scurried around to retrieve the edition and shred it.”
* “On January 18, 1961, the International Edition of the New York Times, published in London, referred to [the Archbishop of Canterbury] as the `red-nosed Archbishop’ (meaning `red-robed’).”
* “W.B. Yeats, in his poem `Among School Children,’ mentioned Plato and then `solider Aristotle,’ but the printer made it `soldier Aristotle.’ That version went unchanged in several printings of Yeats’s complete poems while he was still alive, suggesting that he may have decided he could live with `soldier.’ In the edition of 1947, eight years after his death, `solider Aristotle’ was substituted.”
* “When my friend Randolph Fort [who went on to be editor of Emory Magazine] was appointed Beauty Editor of the Emory University Yearbook in the early 1930s, a misprinted headline in the Emory Wheel made him the `Betuty Editor.’ For the rest of his life his friends called him `Betuty.’ “

Nice!
Also, your biz reminds me that I could use a driver tomorrow. (Actually, I dislike driving and would have a driver or just take cabs if I were rich.) Comcast Internet connection is down (my laptop is running the ‘net on Netgear), and it’s going to freezing rain/snow here. I’m going to have to cab it to the office. SIGH (normally I telecommute).
LOL, I Love driving, in ANY weather, anywhere, anytime.

Driving story from today:
I had to go to Best Buy on the beltway. On the way home, I had a feeling someone was going to screw up. I thought - big truck might crush those three vehicles. Then I noticed the back vehicle center lane had two big metal file cabinets/lockers upright at the back. I slowed down to give it space (as always, I was in the slow lane). Maybe the red car will spin out?
Just then, one of the lockers toppled off the back of the truck and bounced straddling my lane and the middle lane. The car behind it was not tailgating and slowed down, and I had left a lot of room, because I had a hunch SOMETHING was about to happen. I don’t know about you all, but when I get these hunches, they usually turn out to be useful.
So no one hit anyone - at least not initially (It happened right at my turn off). Called 911 and reported it to the troopers - good deed for the day, yes?
Thanks to the powers that be for the head’s up.

speaking of dinner. i have been excluded from a gathering this evening because
my presence is an issue for some individuals who have been invited.
these are a group of friends i have known for yrs.
of course since i have had my post 9-11 awakening and they have not, the relationships have become somewhat strained.
oddly, now, more so than ever. (and their asshole won.) wtf?
i only found out abt. the party because i was talking to one of my friends and she said she was going over to ‘so and so’s tonight. then there was an awkward “uh-oh” moment of silence.
and of course i realize instantly i am not invited.
well, i knew the break was coming. inevitably.
so, i’m fixing to dump me some libs. 2 at least.
it is just too difficult to have ‘friends’ like this.

Had a similar incident w/ a lumber truck years ago. Scary shit. My 6th grade teacher, who was an avid bicyclist, was killed after he retired when an improperly tied down canoe blew off the roof of a car and hit him.

The NY Tea Party was over 100 strong I think, mostly well spoken if not professionally organized. The Jr Press stringers who showed probably found someone embarrassing to interview if they tried hard enough. Hope we keep plugging away.

I have a story from a couple of years ago. I got off the highway to go home. I always slow down when I reach the next street, but don’t stop if nothing is coming. (Only a Yield sign and a good view of oncoming traffic.)
This time, I stopped, and wondered why. After I started again, there was a car heading towards me on the wrong side of the road; he was far enough away to get into his lane, but if I hadn’t stopped, he would have hit me.
Those couple of seconds made a difference.

Seriously, I’d take the Light Rail downtown and switch to the Metro, then walk the rest of the way before I’d drive tomorrow. And in Colorado, where I’m from, I used to go the speed limit on ice and snow of all sorts. But I had studded snow tires there! Here, my truck does ok on ice, but it scares the heck out of me, because I hit black ice twice in the past and spun out in different vehicles. Both times, I was going about 30 mph.

I’m thinking one of the reasons for making fun of moonbats is their persistent delusion that marching up and down the streets with stupid signs, costumes and (shudder) giant papier mâché puppets - I doubt the “American Tea Party” has those, yet, but wait and see - will somehow effect some kind of change. So in all fairness I apply the same standard to these goofs.

Read your history. It was an act of civil disobedience, requiring courage and imagination. Naming an opposition group today “The American Tea Party” and hanging tea bags from your glasses while strolling aimlessly around a park is just silly.

Right, because everyone who didn’t show up at this lame-ass “protest” is an Obama devotee.

So now they’re patriots? As opposed to Obama supporters, who are not? Get a grip.
And every time is a critical time in history. Sashaying around in front of City Hall does exactly nothing to change anything, except give some people a little exercise. I’m all for that.

It can tell us whether or not Garrett Lisi has indeed figured out the Grand Unified Theory Of Everything, that finally unites the four fundamental forces of nature - the electrostrong, electroweak, electromagnetic, and the gravitational, and unites Einstein’s relativity theory and Feynmann’s quantum mechanics:

David Koresh died near Waco on April 19th, 1993; the SCSC was killed by Congress, over Bill Clinton’s objections, shortly thereafter. Perhaps there was opposition to the building of such a large and expensive machine, one designed to plumb the deepest secrets of the universe, so close to the home ground of the Waco Wackoes, where it might be vulnerable to Luddite sabotage.

One does not treat liquid helium with contempt. Nor do they screw with superconducting magnets. Koresh and his nutburgers had little to do with the shutdown. More of an issue was the continuing cost overruns and the fact it was being built outside of the normal research corridors.
I had several coworkers who hired onto the preliminary staff with SCSC who found themselves unemployed before ‘93, due to the budget cutbacks. Engineering jobs were difficult to come by because of DOD cutbacks in ongoing defense contracts.
