Hitchens: The Swastika and the Cedar

World • Views: 17,194

Christopher Hitchens finally files a report on his run-in with fascist thugs in Beirut, as part of a longer essay on The Swastika and the Cedar.

As Arab thoroughfares go, Hamra Street in the center of Beirut is probably the most chic of them all. International in flavor, cosmopolitan in character, it boasts the sort of smart little caf where a Lebanese sophisticate can pause between water-skiing in the Mediterranean in the morning and snow-skiing in the mountains just above the city in the afternoon. “The Paris of the Middle East” used to be the clich about Beirut: by that exacting standard, I suppose, Hamra Street would be the Boulevard Saint-Germain.

Not at all the sort of place you would expect to find a spinning red swastika on prominent display. Yet, as I strolled in company along Hamra on a sunny Valentine’s Day last February, in search of a trinket for the beloved and perhaps some stout shoes for myself, a swastika was just what I ran into. I recognized it as the logo of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, a Fascist organization (it would be more honest if it called itself “National Socialist”) that yells for a “Greater Syria” comprising all of Lebanon, Israel/Palestine, Cyprus, Jordan, Kuwait, Iraq, and swaths of Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt. It’s one of the suicide-bomber front organizations—the other one being Hezbollah, or “the party of god”—through which Syria’s Ba’thist dictatorship exerts overt and covert influence on Lebanese affairs.

Well, call me old-fashioned if you will, but I have always taken the view that swastika symbols exist for one purpose only—to be defaced. Telling my two companions to hold on for a second, I flourish my trusty felt-tip and begin to write some offensive words on the offending poster. I say “begin” because I have barely gotten to the letter k in a well-known transitive verb when I am grabbed by my shirt collar by a venomous little thug, his face glittering with hysterical malice. With his other hand, he is speed-dialing for backup on his cell phone. As always with episodes of violence, things seem to slow down and quicken up at the same time: the eruption of mayhem in broad daylight happening with the speed of lightning yet somehow held in freeze-frame. It becomes evident, as the backup arrives, that this gang wants to take me away.

I am as determined as I can be that I am not going to be stuffed into the trunk of some car and borne off to a private dungeon (as has happened to friends of mine in Beirut in the past). With my two staunch comrades I approach a policeman whose indifference seems well-nigh perfect. We hail a cab and start to get in, but one of our assailants gets in also, and the driver seems to know intimidation only too well when he sees it. We retreat to a stretch of sidewalk outside a Costa caf, and suddenly I am sprawled on the ground, having been hit from behind, and someone is putting the leather into my legs and flanks. At this point the crowd in the caf begins to shout at the hoodlums, which unnerves them long enough for us to stop another cab and pull away. My shirt is spattered with blood, but I’m in no pain yet: the nastiest moment is just ahead of me. As the taxi accelerates, a face looms at the open window and a fist crashes through and connects with my cheekbone. The blow isn’t so hard, but the contorted, glaring, fanatical face is a horror show, a vision from hell. It’s like looking down a wobbling gun barrel, or into the eyes of a torturer. I can see it still.

We debated this point ad nauseam before, but what the hell: I think Hitchens displayed a noble spirit, but poor judgment. He put his companions at risk. (He mentions his “two staunch companions”; I’ve met one of them. Nice guy, very smart guy, has done lots of fascinating things, but I doubt he’s much of a street fighter.)

I admire Hitchens for not embroidering the incident with fabulous tales of his bravery. Truth was, he was blindsided, knocked to the ground, kicked while incapacitated, and then punched by surprise through a window. He didn’t get a chance to land any blows back.

Most macho men would have embellished the story with various versions of “And then I kicked his ass!” Kudos to Hitchens for keeping it real.

It’s lovely the way he spells out the responsibility of Syria for all those murders without ever once explicitly laying it at their door.

I used to loathe Hitchens in the old days, when he was an unreconstructed leftist who hated Israel.

The events of the past few years have put him in quite a different light. I no longer loathe him - I respect him, even if I disagree with some of his positions.

When looking at Hitchens, it is clear that his guiding light is - unrepentant, pure atheism. He despises religion and people with religious views, and he truly hates religious zealots.

His weak spot is that he clearly equates all religous zealots as the same - thus when he says:

the contorted, glaring, fanatical face is a horror show, a vision from hell. It’s like looking down a wobbling gun barrel, or into the eyes of a torturer. I can see it still.

- I believe that he would say the same thing if he were confronted by a Hebron settler, or an American anti-abortion protester. He doesn’t see any difference among religious fanatics, although he would certainly admit that there are fewer Christian and Jewish fanatics than exist in the Muslim world.

He doesn’t see Islam as uniquely destructive when compared to other major religions, which is where his ideology fails me.

My motto is to not initiate a provocation in which you either can not or do not intend to prevail.

Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance

Do not be Unintentionally Rude

Those two mottos can take a gentleman far. Hitchens should have told his companions what he intended and planned to do so and get out safely.

You talking about the Microsoft® Windows® Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830), updated to find and irradicate the April 1st Conficker worm? I still run Win98SE and so am relatively immune to the bugger.

re: #16 Occasional Reader

We debated this point ad nauseam before, but what the hell: I think Hitchens displayed a noble spirit, but poor judgment. He put his companions at risk. (He mentions his “two staunch companions”; I’ve met one of them. Nice guy, very smart guy, has done lots of fascinating things, but I doubt he’s much of a street fighter.)

Which one? Totten?

Totten, who’s written about this, warned Hitchens away. He saw the trouble coming and tried to prevent Hitchens from being (brave but) stupid. Still he stood up for Hitchens.

You are comparing apples to oranges.

Apple = Hitchens defacing a piece of cloth
Orange = being set upon and being beaten up for defacing a piece of cloth.

No Holds Barred: Christopher Hitchens and the killer Jews

Now he is at it again, only this time he’s outdone himself. Writing in the March 23 edition of the Slate website, Hitchens argued that the religious settlers in Israel are preparing for a future where “Torah verses will also be found that make it permissible to murder secular Jews as well as Arabs” as they all coalesce together to make the West bank into an apocalyptic Jewish theocracy.

What makes Hitchens so sure that his vision of Jewish mass-murder is just around the corner? He cites three proofs. First, Baruch Goldstein, whom he cites yet again. Second, OC Chaplaincy Corps Brig.-Gen. Avichai Ronzki who “said that the main reason for a Jewish doctor to treat a non-Jew on the Sabbath… is to avoid exposing Diaspora Jews to hatred.” And third, the story in Numbers 31 of how Moses commanded the Jews to slaughter the Midianites. Of the story Hitchens writes, “The nationalist rabbis who prepare Israeli soldiers for the mission seem to think that this book might be the world of God, in which case the only misinterpretation would be the failure to take it literally.”

As PB0 has landed in Lunnon, here’s another little snippet of info:

Top three Tories will meet Barack Obama

From that link:
Mr Cameron, who is thought to be the only opposition politician the US president is meeting during his first foreign visit, said that he would be focusing on trade.
The issue allows the Tory leader - who opposes a further fiscal stimulus - to avoid a direct confrontation with Mr Obama, who has been the leading advocate of more cash injections.
The meeting, which will take place on Wednesday afternoon in a Central London location, underscores the strength of Mr Cameron’s political position ahead of a general election that must be called within 13 months.

The two members of his shadow cabinet who’ll accompany him are william Hague, Shadow Foreign Secretary (very sharp mind, former Tory Leader) and George Osborne, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer.

All I can say is, well well well

That reminds me of a joke:

A World War II pilot is reminiscing before school children about his days in the air force. (Joke best delivered with a good thick accent)

“In 1942,” he says, “the situation was really tough. The Germans had a very strong air force. I remember, ” he continues, “one day I was protecting the bombers and suddenly, out of the clouds, these fokkers appeared.

(At this point, several of the children giggle.)

I looked up, and right above me was one of them. I aimed at him and shot him down. They were swarming. I immediately realized that there was another fokker behind me.”

At this instant the girls in the auditorium start to giggle and boys start to laugh. The teacher stands up and says, “I think I should point out that ‘Fokker’ was the name of the German-Dutch aircraft company”

“That’s true,” says the pilot, “but these fokkers were flying Messerschmidts.”

No, there are real live genuine swastikas on some old New York buildings too—not just the Greek Meander.

They usually appear these days in tile floors in the vestibules of buildings constructed between 1880 and 1910 or thereabouts; you don’t see many as a detail on building exteriors, whether because they were not much used or because they were removed during WWII.

Hezbollah Doesn’t Have Wings

A few weeks ago Britain decided to unfreeze “diplomatic relations” with Hezbollah, and the nonsensical phrases “political wing” and “military wing” have been used to describe the Iranian-backed militia ever since. Britain now says it’s okay to meet with members of Hezbollah’s “political wing” while maintaining the blacklisting of its “military wing,” but these “wings” don’t exist in any meaningful sense.

The Obama Administration knows better. One U.S. official wants Britain to explain “the difference between the political, social and military wings of Hezbollah because we don’t see the difference between the integrated leadership that they see.” “The US does not distinguish between military, cultural and political wings of Hezbollah,” another U.S. official said, “and our decision to avoid making such a distinction is premised on accurate available information indicating that all Hezbollah wings and branches share finances, personnel and unified leadership and they all support violence.”

He’s not the Barack Obama Europe Knew

For starters, America cannot afford to casually “end” a war it is winning. Obama’s anti-Iraq War agenda has evaporated. European publics are disappointed, but their leaders will let it slide so long as they don’t have to send troops. This is why Afghanistan is a problem. Obama can call the war on terror whatever he wants, but any concerted use of force against Muslims will be, from a combat standpoint, largely unilateral. European leaders have lost the will and the political capital to risk domestic Islamist upheaval should they raise guns in Muslim lands. The war on terror’s biggest motivational challenge is not linguistic or stylistic, but demographic.

re: #83 martinsmithy

You must not have read the article.

Excerpt:

Officially removed from that soil, Syria continues to manipulate by proxies and by surrogates. One of its projections of power is the S.S.N.P., the Christian Orthodox Fascist group with which I tangled (and which is thought to have provided the muscle in some of the abovementioned assassinations).

Sal: Yep, that’s right; the Lebanazis who attacked Hitchens weren’t Muslim; they were Christian. Just like the vast majority of the original Nazis were.

Syrian_Social_Nationalist_Party is a secular fascist party. Link the Nazis they emulate, they are not at all Christian in their ideology.

Saadeh, the party’s ‘leader for life’, was an admirer of Adolf Hitler influenced by Nazi and fascist ideology.[4][7] The party adopted a reversed swastika as the party’s symbol, sang the party’s anthem to Deutschland über alles, and included developing the cult of a leader, advocating totalitarian government, and glorifying an ancient pre-Christan past and the organic whole of the Syrian Volk or nation.

re: #255 Kenneth

Syrian_Social_Nationalist_Party is a secular fascist party. Link the Nazis they emulate, they are not at all Christian in their ideology.

From your own link:

Lebanese historian Kamal Salibi gives a somewhat contrasting interpretation, pointing to the position of the Greek Orthodox community as a large minority in both Syria and Lebanon for whom “the concept of pan-Syrianism was more meaningful than the concept of Arabism” while at the same time they resented Maronite dominance in Lebanon. Saadeh [the Greek Orthodox Christian founder of the SSNP], according to Salibi,

“…found a ready following among his co-religionists. His idea of secular pan-Syrianism also proved attractive to many Druzes and Shiites; to Christians other than the Greek Orthodox, including some Maronites who were disaffected by both Lebanism and Arabism; and also to many Sunnite Muslims who set a high value on secularism, and who felt that they had far more in common with their fellow Syrians of whatever religion or denomination than with fellow Sunnite or Muslim Arabs elsewhere. Here again, an idea of nationalism had emerged which had sufficient credit to make it valid. In the Lebanese context, however, it became ready cover for something more archaic, which was essentially Greek Orthodox particularism.”

Prof. Salibi remarks on the beginnings of Saadeh’s party in the 1930s: “[A]mong its first members were students and young graduates of the American University of Beirut.” This early party was “mainly Greek Orthodox and Protestants with some Shi’ites and Druzes… .”

Maybe it’s a stupid idea for an American to be defacing posters in a violent country, full of violent factions
who hate Americans?

…particularly when said poster belongs to one of those
factions.

It’s not heroic to put yourself and your companions
in mortal danger simply to deface a poster. It’s
egotistical.

Evil unopposed perdures.

re: #262 Salamantis

Somehow, defacing a poster doesn’t strike
me as a blow against evil.

If you’re going to risk your life, as well as
those of your campanions, you should do it
for something that will make a meaningful
difference.

Well written article. Sometimes, it is the small efforts of resistance that initiate the larger ones. If the street has been in the stranglehold of this Socialist group, a small defacement may be what was needed. I liked his comment “call me old-fashioned if you will, but I have always taken the view that swastika symbols exist for one purpose only—to be defaced”
