He is the guy at the office who thinks he's funny but will never ever be even in a million years, you know, the "working hard or hardly working?" guy. But you can't tell him to eff off because he's the nephew of the boss.
I mean, even if I agreed with the things he says, I would be so embarassed to have him as my spokesperson. Yuck.

That reminds me of something Trent Reznor (NIN) once said. Something to the affect that if he ever went to a therapist and got help for his 'problems', that would be the end of his music career.
I image much the same could be said of Beck.

Here's the funny thing. Beck defenders come on this site saying that he is being attacked for telling the truth (troof is more like it), and get all pissy with LGF.
These Beck defenders are coming here, attacking Charles and LGF, because Charles has been exposing the truth about Beck's wacky conspiracy mongering, and his connections to, and promotion of, even wackier conspiracy mongers like Ron Paul and the John Birch Society.
The light of truth is not on their side, and they can't stand it when it's focused on them.

This may get lost in the Beck-barfing, but I came in too late for the open thread.
Just learned that a great, though little-known, folksinger passed away last month -- and someone I once knew personally.
Johnny Collins' "Shanties & Songs of the Sea" is arguably the best, and the most accurately performed, album of shanties ever produced.
This is the closing track, Farewell Shanty, posted by someone on YouTube. (Three men, a capella, the way they were originally sung.)
RIP Johnny. I thought several times about e-mailing you, but never did. Now I can't, and I'm sorry.

Koskidz: The Man Behind The Defend Glenn Beck Web Site
The executive director of the USJF is Gary Kreep. His biography reveals that he is the general counsel to the racist, anti-immigration group, The Minutemen. He has been affiliated with the radical and violent anti-choice group, Operation Rescue. He was a California delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1976 and 1980.
Most recently Kreep has been a leader of the "birther" movement that seeks to nullify last November's election of the grounds that Obama is not a U.S. citizen. He has been one of the most vocal proponents of the birther myths going back to at least November 2008, when he tried to prevent California delegates to the Electoral College from casting their votes. He originally worked with birther queen, Orly Taitz, representing several clients, including Alan Keyes. He has since replaced Taitz as counsel to birther litigant "Rev." Wiley Drake. Drake is notable for publicly praying for the death of Obama. When a man like Drake selects you to represent him, over Orly Taitz, that is quite an endorsement.
Gary Kreep's bio also mentions that he was a member of Young Americans for Freedom...
The Southern Poverty Law Center took objection to the MSU chapter's actions and has included the organization on its hate group list for 2006 under the "general hate" category.
...
On October 26, 2007, around 50-75 people were involved in protesting a YAF event hosting Nick Griffin, chairman of the British National Party (BNP). Griffin who has been convicted with antisemitism and racism in the United Kingdom, was forced to do a Q&A after being continuously interrupted. [

Far be it from me to defend this Kreep (heh) but the Koskids' attempt to tar him with his YAF membership is a lie by omission. The linked wikipedia article fails to make it clear that YAF's national organization virtually ceased to exist around 2001. The individual chapters are very much local and independent entities that could push almost any agenda at the whim of whoever happens to be in charge locally. Conspiracy nuts and white supremacists have made a deliberate effort to gain control of local chapters in an effort to capitalize on the organization's past reputation.
Note that the sparse YAF national website has not been updated in more than a year. The goings-on in the one chapter at MSU just a couple of years ago have nothing to do with the organization as it was in the 70s and 80s when Kreep was a member.

Here's the even funnier thing: When the libs engaged in wild conspiracy theories, they called it "speaking truth to power." And I'm willing to bet that back then a fair number of Beck knuckle-draggers recognized it as the crap that it is.
Here's the even more funnier thing: Most of the folks that were "speaking truth to power" were those pushing the 9/11 truth movement. They were (and still are) Paulbot libertarians.
Glenn Beck is a Libertarian. He also speaks approvingly of and promotes Ron Paul and members of the John Birch Society. You do the math.

Stunning op-ed from Russ Feingold. Way too much to quote and fisk; suffice it to say that the senator from Wisconsin is resurrecting the cut and run strategy:

I will make one comment: Russ, if you want to negotiate your way out of Afghanistan, it's best to do so from a position of strength (see Gorbachev, circa 1986).
Afghanistan is a blood & treasure pit, and (probably) will be for decades. We've experienced the result when the extremist are left to run the place. Stay we must. Feingold's a moonbat.

Is that the same as YAF.org?
Famous for hosting Robert Spencer.
No, that's the Young America's Foundation. It's a separate organization but something of a spin-off:
FAQ: Are you the former Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) organization?
The two groups are totally separate organizations. They have separate Boards of Directors, separate offices, and separate staffs.
Young America's Foundation is an educational organization that sponsors speakers on campus and in the community, provides activist resources and materials, holds conferences and seminars, and saved the Reagan Ranch. As a non-profit, educational foundation, it engages in non-partisan and non-political activities; all contributions are completely tax deductible.
Young Americans for Freedom, on the other hand, engages in more activist programs such as political training and programs and more partisan activities such as demonstrations and conventions. As such, contributions to Young Americans for Freedom are not tax deductible. Young America's Foundation's leadership includes individuals who were or are active in Young Americans for Freedom including one chairman and three national executive directors.

Remember acid rain?
It was going to deforest all of North America and Europe. I remember being driven around the Black Forest in the early nineties and having it pointed out to me. There certainly were some sickly-looking trees, but on the whole der Schwarzwald still looked pretty green. And as far as I know it's still there.
But it's been a while since I can remember anyone talking about acid rain.

Stay away from the brown acid rain, man...
Actually, I seem to recall acid rain being tied to dirty smoke stacks and the chemicals spewing forth from them. I guess since the USA and Europe doesn't do much heavy industry any more, the acid rain has subsided? And, in India and especially China, they don't give a damn about no acid rain anyhow...

I most probably have lost a friend today. We ran into each other, he was campaigning for the far left party 'Die Linke'. He ticked off so many communist, class-envy, conspiracy theories including trutherism, JFK-stuff, stolen election and to top it all off he complained about my neo-liberalism as being inhumane. So in fact what he did was to insult me but reacted extremely thin skinned when I even mentioned the smallest of his parties shortcomings.

Also, acid rain was never as much of a problem in the US as it was in europe, since our industry has been less heavily packed together and the wind patterns carry a lot of our pollution away from the continent and inhabitaed areas

re: #339 Cato the Elder
Hey, something just occurred to me. I'm reading on of Kurt Vonnegut's later novels, Galápagos, and he mentions acid rain.
So did we fix the problem, or did it go away, or was it never that big a problem to begin with, or has it only been replaced by other problems, like yellow teeth and teenage Brazilian serial knife murderettes?
Just wonderin'.
Mandated flue gas desulfurization at all coal burning power plants. No idea if the problem was as real or widespread or not. Always good to clean up though.
Just not a very sexy crisis - or mitigated.

I've got some killer bees in my backyard. I cannot get rid of the little shits. I had a exterminator come out and kill a bunch of them, but they came back. Then, I hired a beekeeper to come and take them away. They came back again! They like my backyard, i guess. They are set up in several yards the beekeeper said. If we do not get all of them at once, they just keep coming back. There is a lot of orange trees around here...they are attracted to that. I will have to learn to live with them.

I never heard that, but I suppose I'm a recent arrival on this planet compared to many.
I do know that acid rain is a real thing, and does damage foliage and crop yields by acidifying the soil (among other effects). That, in turn has several effects that aren't good for the plants.
I also know that acid rain in the US is not the problem it is in europe, and will likely never be the problem it is in china.

Acid rain was never going to be something that would wipe us out, but it was and can still be a threat to forests, agriculture, stonework, water tables, etc. It is largely mitigated at the source - something where a little expense goes a long way to solve the problem. Oh my:
Oberlander says opponents used scare tactics the very first time the idea of national health insurance was broached — around 1915 — by tying would-be reformers to the nation's then-greatest international threat.
"They said that national health insurance was a plot by the German emperor to take over the United States," he says.
The next effort to remake the health system came during the late 1940s. This time the opposition, led by the American Medical Association, exploited the newest fears. "They said if we adopted national health insurance, the Red army would be marching through the streets of the U.S.; they said this was the first step toward communism," Oberlander says.
By the time the Clinton administration took on the health effort, the power of the American Medical Association was fading. But now a new opponent took its place — the health insurance industry. It ran ads using an ordinary looking couple, named Harry and Louise, to raise doubts among middle-class Americans about how the Clinton plan might hurt rather than help them.
Says Oberlander, "The opponents have changed over time; the tactic of relying on fear and scaring Americans has not."
After reading that overwrought prose, one could hardly blame you for thinking you'd stumbled across a Daily Kos "diary." Well, you're close:

From the end of that:
Republicans insist that fear is not part of their strategy in trying to defeat the current health overhaul effort. "No one's trying to scare people with sound bites. I mean, you know, I've not done that, and I don't know any of the leaders in the House and Senate that have done that," Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said on NPR earlier this week. But that's not convincing to many political scientists like Oberlander, who say they're hearing a lot of what they consider to be deliberate scare tactics.
"Fear is crowding out the truth. And the truth ought to count for something in health care reform and American politics. And right now it doesn't," he says.
The current debate isn't yet over, but so far at least, biology has defeated logic every time.
Emphasis added. Because I think they are saying nothing has ever been accomplished through logic.

Shouldn't we use one for "his" ?
If his' isn't inherently possessive, I'm a toaster.
Thing is, no possessive pronoun uses an apostrophe.
My, mine
Your
His, hers, its
Our
Your
Their
Whose
Nouns use apostrophes + ess. Nouns that end in ess also, e.g. Charles, Charles's, Thomas, Thomas's, Kos, Kos's. Unless they are plural or classical/biblical, e.g. New York Times, New York Times', Jesus, Jesus'. Or end in two esses, like goodness, as in "for goodness' sake".
Cato's abbreviated rules of apostrophes. Please favorite. Donations of beer or vinho verde accepted.

Nearly all boycotts have the reverse effect intended. TV show "Married: With Children" was slated to be canceled by Fox before the end of it's first season.
Some religious busy bodies mounted a boycott campaign against advertisers on the show, and generated enough buzz to save it from cancellation, and give it many successful seasons.

It's quite another if ABCXYZPDQ DNC Hack got tapped for a job with the 0bama Administration, and the org steps up attacks on an individual when that individual starts saying things about ABCXYZPDQ DNC Hack that give him a not-so-fresh feeling in his panties. If grumbling about ABCXYZPDQ DNC Hack is so beyond the pale for the Democrats, can't they ask Soros for more money to set up a "completely unaffiliated" organization to run the attacks on Beck? Speaking of bees, one of my favorite old-time science fiction stories is "The Council of Drones" by W.K. Sonnemann, first published in the October 1936 issue of Amazing Stories.
This involves a scientist who manages to swap minds with a queen bee, and follows his adventures as he rules the hive and comes to identify completely with the bees, rather than with his fellow humans, whom he comes to see as exploiters and enemies. The story is notable for the remarkable onomatopaiec quality Sonnemann gives to the bees' conversation, carried on by a kind of telepathy. The impression of a buzzing, rhythmic monotone is overwhelming when the bees "speak" but is achieved entirely by word choice and pacing.

The fact that there are millions of drooling idiots and millions of sideshow gawkers willing to tune in to Beck is hardly an endorsement of his idiocy.
As for the attention "drawd" to himself, Beck's stain is tainting the entire GOP. I just watched a commercial promoting health care reform; it paints the opposition as a bunch of knuckle dragging conspiracy freaks who spread hysterical lies and misinformation.
And the sad part about this is: they're right, if you're holding up Beck as an example.

Have to transcribe. Here, the scientist, now a queen bee, first discovers his/her ability to communicate with the workers. The queen is addressed as "Masoul" and the workers as "Owo."
"The nectar is good, Masoul. The nectar is bounteous, Masoul. There is plentiful pollen. Let the life of the city wax strong, Masoul. Let us raise brood to raise more brood."
Sixth sense told me that I was being addressed by two workers, one an older bee with not many more days to live, and another younger bee. And, I reflected instantly, my name must be "Masoul." Probably I interpreted the meaning of the thought sense as such because I was the soul of colony, being the mother of all.
"More eggs you would have, Owo?" I said.
"More eggs in the empty shells. It is good to fill all empty cells with eggs of the Owo. But, O Masoul, be sparing of the eggs for the drone. Just a few of the drones. Our city is now beautiful with many drones. O Masoul, is it good?"
"It is good, Owo," I replied.

Whole thing stinks...
In UK, doubts about Lockerbie bomber’s health prognosis
A Scottish opposition politician who also happens to be a physician specializing in the treatment of cancer, says that medical information provided to support the “compassionate release” by the Scottish government of convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset al-Megrahi does not in fact confirm that he has around three months to live.Dr. Richard Simpson, a member of the Scottish Parliament, said that based on records provided, there is “significant doubt” about Mr. Megrahi’s prognosis. Libyan intelligence agent Megrahi, convicted of murdering 270 people in the bombing of Pan Am flight 103, was released after eight years in a Scottish prison so that he could have the comfort of being with friends and family in Libya in his final months. Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill justified the decision based on what he said was strong medical evidence that Megrahi has about three months to live and is dying of prostate cancer.

Thanks Kirel. You didn't have to do that for me, but ya did. And it was cool.
Btw, that story appears in Damon Knight's anthology, Science Fiction of the 30s. It was an SF book club selection so copies are easy to find. There is some fascinating stuff there. Most SF from that period was crap but, as Theodore Sturgeon famously said, "90% of everything is crap." The inverse is that 10% is not crap and it is that 10% that Damon cherry-picked for the anthology.

Well, let's see. "You're discriminating against me because I'm (black), (gay), (conservative), (insert grievance here)." I think you'd better have something more than an accusation to back up your charge, lest you end up looking like a fool.
Okay, we have had over the years a good sample here, where Democrats and Republicans have alternated being in charge. Let's take their audit history, compared with other people in their income bracket who file taxes the same way they do. Audits should decrease with time as they and their accountants become used to one another and how money is spent. Do they? Is there a correlation between Democrats in charge and their audits, that has nothing to do with other factors, like a sudden rise in income, changing accountants, and the like?

FWIW, I think this is what Beck was wound up about last week.
/AFAIK, Obama never has explained this bizarre statement
That came to my attention last year. In actuality that's just a sound byte and taken out of context from the full speech in which he said:
Obama, July 2, Colorado Springs, CO:
[As] president I will expand AmeriCorps to 250,000 slots [from 75,000] and make that increased service a vehicle to meet national goals, like providing health care and education, saving our planet and restoring our standing in the world, so that citizens see their effort connected to a common purpose.
People of all ages, stations and skills will be asked to serve. Because when it comes to the challenges we face, the American people are not the problem – they are the answer. So we are going to send more college graduates to teach and mentor our young people. We'll call on Americans to join an energy corps, to conduct renewable energy and environmental clean-up projects in their neighborhoods all across the country.
We will enlist our veterans to find jobs and support for other vets, and to be there for our military families. And we're going to grow our Foreign Service, open consulates that have been shuttered and double the size of the Peace Corps by 2011 to renew our diplomacy. We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set.
We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded. We need to use technology to connect people to service. We'll expand USA Freedom Corps to create online networks where American can browse opportunities to volunteer. You'll be able to search by category, time commitment and skill sets. You'll be able to rate service opportunities, build service networks, and create your own service pages to track your hours and activities.
This will empower more Americans to craft their own service agenda and make their own change from the bottom up.
From this we can see that he specifies the USA Freedom Corps which is described in Wiki as follows:
The USA Freedom Corps was a body within the Executive Office of the President of the United States under George W. Bush, who as President served as its chair. Bush announced its creation in his State of the Union Address of January 29, 2002, and it was officially established on January 30, 2002, the next day. It described itself as a "Coordinating Council... working to strengthen our culture of service and help find opportunities for every American to start volunteering."

re: #516 Killian Bundy
FWIW, I think this is what Beck was wound up about last week.
/AFAIK, Obama never has explained this bizarre statement
Part 2
The USA Freedom Corps was started by George W. Bush. The Wiki article further informs us that:
In a commentary on the right-wing website NewsMax.com, Miguel A. Faria Jr. attacked the program as statist and collectivist, a "bureaucratic boondoggle" that might evolve into "compulsory service," and the name "USA Freedom Corps" as an instance of Orwellian Newspeak. Meanwhile, in a piece on the left-wing magazine American Prospect's site, Jeremy Lott critically linked the announcement of the Corps' creation to the controversial Operation TIPS, a program encouraging citizens to report 'suspicious activity'
Thus we see that there were similar concerns with the USA Freedom Corps for some time now and have been in existence for nearly 7 years.

Yeah, but Obama added a civilian security force, just as well equipped and funded as the military, different from Freedom Corps.
Just bizarre.

re: #481 Cato the Elder
Thing is, no possessive pronoun uses an apostrophe.
My, mine
Your
His, hers, itsOur
Your
TheirWhose
Nouns use apostrophes + ess. Nouns that end in ess also, e.g. Charles, Charles's, Thomas, Thomas's, Kos, Kos's. Unless they are plural or classical/biblical, e.g. New York Times, New York Times', Jesus, Jesus'. Or end in two esses, like goodness, as in "for goodness' sake".
Cato's abbreviated rules of apostrophes. Please favorite. Donations of beer or vinho verde accepted.
Upding for simplified avoidance of the dreaded grocer's apostrophe and for vinho verde. Vinho verde is amazing - and far too rare in my neck of the woods.

A proud Hamilton was accepted to study at Oxford down in England. He'd never been away from home before and was quite homesick. After a few weeks pass, he got a letter from his parents back home, asking how he was getting on down in England. He replied that his classes were fine, the weather was okay, food was tolerable, but that he wasn't getting on well with his classmates - the English were very strange. For example, he wrote, his dorm mate in the room to his left screamed all night long. The neighbors to the right pounded on the walls at all hours. As for himself, since he couldn't sleep and was homesick, he just played the pipes all night.

Thousands cheer troops in Colo. Springs parade

COLORADO SPRINGS — Thousands of cheering, flag-waving people crowded onto sidewalks today to welcome military personnel back from Iraq and thank them for their service there and in Afghanistan.
An hour-long procession of soldiers from nearby Fort Carson and airmen from some of Colorado Springs' four Air Force installations tramped through downtown, many chanting marching cadences.
Interspersed among the units were military vehicles, fire trucks and bands — one playing "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." Seven gleaming white police motorcycles led the "Red, White and Brave Welcome Home Parade," and a lone streetsweeper brought up the rear. Vintage fighter planes roared overhead.

I knew what he meant. Do you want to scare off first time posters with spelling and grammar corrections? Or only new posters with opinions you don't share?
That poster's account is nearly two years old. It's a sleeper, or a sock, if this is it's first time posting. At least, that is commonly the case.
People here found it strange that I waited three days before making my first comment. Usually people can't wait to speak up when they hit a registration window, they said to me. My explanation? I was stinking drunk when I caught the registration window, and did not want my first post to be that of a rambling, incoherent drunk.
But nearly two years before making your first post? C'mon, something just don't smell right.

Hard to post a first comment. BTW, did you see where I called an apostrophe an "up-comma"? Heard that one in the clinic and liked it! lol
Think it will catch on?
I've heard it called "comma to the top".

re: #608 ~Fianna
I think that's what I was taught, but maybe there's a New English?
English is where my conservatism finds full flower.
The Germans had a "spelling reform" a while back. Made some things a bit clearer, some less clear, ruined a few historical spellings, and fucked with the heads of a lot of older people.
If they try to do that here I'll go to the barricades. English bears its history in its spellings. For example, the words "thought" and "daughter" - often mocked by "simple English" proponents. They tell volumes about the history of pronunciation and also about our language's relations with, say, German. "Daughter" and "Tochter" are both daugthers of an Indo-European mother word that also gave birth to Greek ΘΥΓΑΤΗP. Turning it into "dawter" would rob us of that story.

re: #616 snowcrash
No reason to be nervous. Sure, you've gotta have thick scales to hang with this crowd, because at some point, someone is either going to challenge you or insult you, and you gotta be able to take your lumps if you say something stupid. But on the whole, it's a great crowd.
Just had another thought on the potential sleeper/sock. Deleted comments do not show up in your comment tally. If that person has been here two years, and only one comment is left standing, that could also say something a person.

My problem with commas is that the rules for comma usage changed sometime between the time I learned them and now.
I usually do just what you do - if there is a pause in my head, I'm likely to insert a comma.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Look up the book ...
Eats, Shoots and Leaves by Lynne Truss
Leave out the comma in the above titled book and it has a new meaning.

Go to Madeira. My wife's family is from there. They just spent 6 weeks there before coming to the US. I have been there 3 times. Great summer spot. You would not need more than 7 to 10 days to see the whole island. My wife also has family in the Canary Islands. I have never been there, but hear that it is nice.

If it's beaches, babes and beauty - natural and man-made - you're after, might I recommend Dubrovnik?
George Bernard Shaw had this to say about it: "Those who seek paradise on Earth should come to Dubrovnik."
I was there for two weeks in the eighties. It is one of the few - if not the - only remaining completely walled cities in Europe. The only modern vehicles allowed are trash trucks and police/fire/ambulance.
There is a slanting stone sticking out of one of the walls inside the city. If you can stand on it for more than ten seconds, they will buy you drinks. I still remember that hangover.
I hear the gratuitous bomb damage done during the Yugo war (Dubrovnik had no strategic part in anything - the Serbs just bombed it to be dicks) is undetectable now.
And skinny-dipping is encouraged.
I bet you can stay twice as long there on the Adriatic for the same money you'd spend in the better-known places.
667 | Irenicum Sat, Aug 29, 2009 8:07:31pm |

And there are bonuses (
boni,
if you're me).
1) Adriatic seawater has a much higher salt content than almost anywhere on earth. In combination with rational doses of sunlight, this may fix any skin problems you might have that your clueless dermatologist can't handle.
2) You get to support a newish American ally.
3) The food is the absolute best of the Mediterranean diet.

Good stuffv JCM,
It reminds me of a spotty bank clerk some years ago who, upon being confronted by a masked gunman demanding money told him to "Piss off".
The robber fled and was apprehended.
At the trial the judge complemented the 18yr old lad for his unflinching courage and awarded him£50 from public funds.
