It's 67 at noon here in the Rockies at 8200 feet. It's been a much cooler summer than I've seen in a long time. Nights have been in the 40's at times (like last night).

I hope this doesn't bode bad for the winter.

Because Hollywood is absolutely out of original ideas.

the only two truly original films of the last 20 years have been The Blair Witch Project and Memento. (Not that they were necessarily the best films of the last 20 years, only the most original.) Everything else has been a remake, a rehash, or derivative.

Saw "District 9" the other day. Brilliant movie, on at least a couple of levels. Best sci-fi flick I've seen in years.

Some years ago, when our kids were young, we had a couple of au pairs from South Africa help us out. We still stay in touch with them, as they have grown up and had families of their own. Both of them live near Johannesburg, the slums of which served as the set for this movie. It's an ugly, scary place in real life. In the movie, it's just as nasty.

We have a husky, a newfie/chow and a red heeler that usually scares the bears away. The red heeler has been seen nipping at the back legs of a bear on the property, bear ran.

Not to sound like an advertisement, Zombie, but have you ever checked out an Endless Pool? The hubby and I bought one a couple years back and we love it! It fits into really small spaces, too. With the Fastlane Pool you don't even have to make it a permanent installation.

Yesterday we attended the Sacramento Tea Party (the first time in our lives that we have ever partaken of the time-honored Bay Area tradition of going to a protest) and it was 105 F! Felt even hotter because it was humid, too. It was only 99 F back home in Benicia, where we could hardly wait to change out of our sweat-soaked clothes and jump into the pool for a cool-down. This morning it was 72 F at 6:30 AM out on the back patio in the shade and knew we were going to be in for a scorcher today.

No there is nothing cute about bears. They are dangerous animals period. I am not complaining about them, but there is too much "cute and furry" mentality up here in the mountains. And it is mainly yuppie types who move up here and think that the wild is some sort of personal petting zoo for them.

They do things to attract wildlife, feeding them, encouraging them and the next thing you know, you have a home invasion.

It's not even good to feed or encourage deer, since I have seen hem get run over by cars and killed because they have become to use to human activity and they are intent on hanging around where they shouldn't.

Wildlife is interesting, but they are in no way pets.

re: #81 garycooper

Sorry, but there were some great, original movies made in the past 20 years. Don't have time to list them all right now, but the Coens alone have about ten to their credit.

The Coen Brothers films were good -- great, even -- but in the end they were still films noirs. Simple Plan: heist gone awry. Fargo: Police Procedural. Oh Bother Where Art Thou: The Odyssey. etc.

Now, mind you, I love all those movies -- don't get me wrong -- but they were not truly original concepts. Sometimes the best and most enjoyable films are masterworks within a genre. And sometimes completely original films are unenjoyable. (Kenneth Anger, I'm looking in your direction...).

Yeah, but change is so hard to accept.

I like the invisibilty/subtlety factor of the old design. Now, the thread looks like a big repetitive list of the words "reply" and "quote."

I'm sure I'll get used to it, but at first any change is jarring.

I have some mice in the neighborhood that keep getting into Maisey the Parrots food bowl over night. I've put out live traps for them and got one three night in a row now (or the same one keeps coming back).

Knowing Maisey the Parrot, she probably sit there at night and watches the little thing sit in her seed bowl, stocking up it's cheeks and helps it out of the cage.

Parrot food is expensive and these mice can get a half a bowl a night out of her cage.

I've been letting them out of the traps across the road and up the hill a bit, but if you can see one mouse, there are probably 20 more nearby.

I don't want this to become a Mouse canteen here.

Because Hollywood is absolutely out of original ideas.

the only two truly original films of the last 20 years have been The Blair Witch Project and Memento. (Not that they were necessarily the best films of the last 20 years, only the most original.) Everything else has been a remake, a rehash, or derivative.

I loved Memento. Very original. I had a problem with one thing in it but I can't remember what it was. It fits with the theme that I can't remember, but I think it had to do with the reveal. Hmmm. I should have tattooed it on my arm.

The Blair Witch Project was a problem, IMO, only in that they didn't know how to make a movie through improvisation and guide a story too. It had some great, creepy moments, but it could have been more, IMO.

You're right about the original ideas. But the powers-that-be aren't all that interested in original ideas. Whenever I see something different like "Being John Malkovich" I wonder how in the hell it ever got made.

Just got back from a journey to the big farmer's market. The main point was to get a whole fish to have for dinner, but also to use to show the older boys fish anatomy (we dissected our shark last week, this next week we're on to bony fish).

All kinds of fun stuff over there -- I could easily have spent a couple hundred dollars just on wine and cheese, but I'm not a liberal so it didn't happen.

How big is the farmer?

Within Anchorage there is a huge moose population - and clear distinctions between - city moose and country moose behaviors.

An occasional bear wanders into DT Anchorage from time to time - it's expected.

I almost got run over by a deer on a quiet street in the East Bay a while ago.

Animal control was rather irritated with me when I suggested they try to get it before it caused havoc on San Pablo Avenue.

Should I attach a pole to my car?

I live in Anchorage. A few years ago in the winter I was working at Whittier, a small town about 50 miles SE of here. My employer was having us stay in a condo-style building. One day I looked out the back window and saw a man with a long fiberglass pole, probing here and there in the snow behind the building. I got curious and went out and asked him what he was doing, and he said he was looking for his motorhome. LOL.

Regarding bears here in Alaska, here's a pretty good reference.

For some reason, bears haven't been bugging people here in Anchorage nearly as much this summer as they did last summer.

Here at Rossmoor in Walnut Creek we share with herds of wild turkeys, thousands of deer and a few coyotes.

Rumor has it we have a puma or two as well - I've never seen one or any sign - but with that many deer around and all the open space there must be one or two.

Mountainview Cemetery in Oakland has at least one puma (an occasional partially eaten dear carcass is the indicator) and much smaller deer population.

It's true, most Europeans really do not 'get' what the Americas (or Australia) are like in terms of bigness, and land, and animals, and etc.

As far as I am concerned we are at war with this insufferable jackass and his minions! They will hit a roadblock though if they come to our homes because they WILL meet fierce resistance.
Only someone insane would be perpetrating this war he is so blatantly bringing to our doorsteps or perhaps their is a method to his madness? Either way he GREATLY under-estimates the will of the common man such as myself because I have NO problem killing and dying for what i believe and the country I love!

re: #99 zombie

The Coen Brothers films were good -- great, even -- but in the end they were still films noirs. Simple Plan: heist gone awry. Fargo: Police Procedural. Oh Bother Where Art Thou: The Odyssey. etc.

Now, mind you, I love all those movies -- don't get me wrong -- but they were not truly original concepts. Sometimes the best and most enjoyable films are masterworks within a genre. And sometimes completely original films are unenjoyable. (Kenneth Anger, I'm looking in your direction...).

How about the films of Charlie Kaufman? Pretty brilliant and original. I'm also a big fan of Todd Haynes. Clint Eastwood makes great movies. Paul Thomas Anderson has some doozies to his credit. I'm a sucker for Tarantino, too, though I was mildly disappointed by "Basterds." Scorsese keeps making movies that force you to give them your full attention.

I like David Gordon Green's style, too. "Pineapple Express" was amazing. I wish his adaptation of "A Confederacy Of Dunces" had gotten made, starring Will Ferrell as Ignatius. His first movie, "George Washington," is definitely worth checking out.

Anyway, I'm still a big fan of the movies, even though they are obviously ruled by the General Theory Of Suckitude, which states that 90% of everything is crap. With movies, the crap-ratio is a bit higher, but you can't toss the good babies out with the used bathwater.

One (or more) of these nuts is bound to snap sooner or later. I don't see much chance of avoiding it.

One of the really strange things about this nutbag element is the sinister significance they attach to relatively minor legal enactments, as though the lack of legal authority could somehow keep the kind of insanely oppressive, lawless, and unconstitutional government they envision from sending us all to the gulag.
Another example: A while back, an Alex Joneser started lecturing me about these secret underground railways the gummint is building to transport various undesirables to the new gulag. When asked where he got his information, he indicated he had seen it on video. I told him not to believe everything he saw on video. He responded that it had to be true because the gummint would not allow people to put lies on video and would shut them down if they did.
I am not making that up.

I can't decide if it is worse than the Clinton years or if the internet has grown so much it makes it seem worse. I remember quite a few far out story's back then but in those days the stories spread by word of mouth a lot now they can be spread from coast to coast in a matter of a second.

I think the internet makes a big difference from the Clinton years. What makes it even worse is Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and even prominent Republicans are spreading conspiracy theories and talk of revolution.

380 Racer X  Sat, Aug 29, 2009 1:07:41pm

Just got this email and thought I'd share:

History 101

For those that don't know about history ... Here is a condensed version:

Humans originally existed as members of small bands of nomadic hunters/gatherers. They lived on deer in the mountains during the summer and would go to the coast and live on fish and lobster in the winter.

The two most important events in all of history were the invention of beer and the invention of the wheel. The wheel was invented to get man to the beer. These were the foundation of modern civilization and together were the catalyst for the splitting of humanity into two distinct subgroups:

1. Liberals, and
2. Conservatives

Once beer was discovered, it required grain and that was the beginning of agriculture.

Neither the glass bottle nor aluminum can were invented yet, so while our early humans were sitting around waiting for them to be invented, they just stayed close to the brewery. That's how villages were formed.

Some men spent their days tracking and killing animals to B-B-Q at night while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of what is known as the Conservative movement.

Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting learned to live off the conservatives by showing up for the nightly B-B-Q's and doing the sewing, fetching, and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the Liberal movement.

Some of these liberal men eventually evolved into women. The rest became known as girlie-men. Some noteworthy liberal achievements include the domestication of cats, the invention of group therapy, group hugs, and the concept of Democratic voting to decide how to divide the meat and beer that conservatives provided.

Over the years conservatives came to be symbolized by the largest, most powerful land animal on earth, the elephant. Liberals are symbolized by the jackass.

Modern liberals like imported beer (with lime added), but most prefer white wine or imported bottled water. They eat raw fish but like their beef well done. Sushi, tofu, and French food are standard liberal fare. Another interesting evolutionary side note: most of their women have higher testosterone levels than their men. Most social workers, personal injury attorneys, journalists, dreamers in Hollywood and group therapists are liberals. Liberals invented the designated hitter rule because it wasn't fair to make the pitcher also bat.

Conservatives drink domestic beer, mostly Bud. They eat red meat and still provide for their women. Conservatives are big-game hunters, rodeo cowboys, lumberjacks, construction workers, firemen, medical doctors, police officers, corporate executives, athletes, members of the military, airline pilots and generally anyone who works productively. Conservatives who own companies hire other conservatives who want to work for a living.

Liberals produce little or nothing. They like to govern the producers and decide what to do with the production. Liberals believe Europeans are more enlightened than Americans. That is why most of the liberals remained in Europe when conservatives were coming to America . They crept in after the Wild West was tamed and created a business of trying to get more for nothing.

Here ends today's lesson in world history:

It should be noted that a Liberal may have a momentary urge to angrily respond to the above before forwarding it.

A Conservative will simply laugh and be so convinced of the absolute truth of this history that it will be forwarded immediately to other true believers and to more liberals just to tick them off.

And there you have it. Let your next action reveal your true self.

Some people are into conspiracy theories because they're fun and dramatic but I see it spiraling out of control.

The conspiracy culture grew practically unchecked for decades. I don't really blame mainstream media and politicians for this, since there were good reasons not to waste time and attention on fringe craziness. It continued to grow, however, eventually becoming a huge but under-served media market that the likes of Glenn Beck have noticed and are rushing to exploit. This fuels further growth by lending an unwarranted but quite real aura of respectability. The overall result is the mainstreaming of rank insanity.

It's ten pm. Do you know where your kids are?

I think the internet makes a big difference from the Clinton years. What makes it even worse is Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and even prominent Republicans are spreading conspiracy theories and talk of revolution.

Definitely. The internet, and the fact that the crazy is bleeding into the mainstream via Fox News, Glenn Beck...Palin, Bachmann...even the main GOP.

For example: two days ago I got an email from the DCCC that starts as follows:

Republicans know the truth is not on their side. Since the beginning of August recess, they've come out with one outlandish lie after another to derail meaningful health insurance reform -- but this one takes the cake.

In a "poll" mailed to supporters, the RNC is actually suggesting that health insurance reform is a Democratic plot to deny health care to Republicans using voter registration data:

Here is a story about it that contains the survey question.

It's not as if there aren't legitimate questions and objections to raise against the reform, but what's up with the outright lies and fearmongering? It's really depressing that it's coming from the RNC itself, not random kooks and pundits.

Reminds me of the London School of Economics-educated young woman who once imformed me that Kentucky Fried Chicken has changed their name to "KFC", because they were legally obligated to do so; because they no longer use "chicken". Rather, they use artificial chicken parts grown in labs. I promptly got online, and showed her their "chicken"-labeled online menu offerings. Oh, she said, that means the "government" hasn't caught up with them yet on the menu thing. (Not sure which "government" she had in mind, as this conversation took place in London.)

This test will determine if you're getting enough sleep or if your mind has really lost it!

The test consists of three parts:

You'll be shown 12 photos in the first part,
You'll be shown another 12 photos in the second part,
You'll be shown 48 photos in the third part and asked if you saw them in the first part, the second part - or never saw them at all.

When you have finished the third part, your results will be given to you.

Let's see how retentive a memory you have

This test will determine if you're getting enough sleep or if your mind has really lost it!

The test consists of three parts:

You'll be shown 12 photos in the first part,
You'll be shown another 12 photos in the second part,
You'll be shown 48 photos in the third part and asked if you saw them in the first part, the second part - or never saw them at all.

When you have finished the third part, your results will be given to you.

Face memory test

Recognition - 92
Temporal - 85

What were we talking about ?

547 Charles Johnson  Sat, Aug 29, 2009 2:12:23pm

Yeah. As I think about it there are a lot of wrinkles in the blog pimp stopper idea. Have to ponder it some more.

Here's another idea -- a way to send a private message to another logged-in user. It would use an alert box, displaying the message and the username it came from. In your 'My Account' page, you'd have a check box to allow or refuse private messages, which would default to 'refuse'. So you'd have to specifically turn it on if you wanted to receive messages.

I think that could be terrific. Would definitely increase the community here, IMO. I think it would increase traffic and draw some of the lurkers into public commenting. I saw someone who is a lurker was looking for me on the overnight but has no way to contact me. I'm sure that sort of thing happens quite often here to everyone.

Also, I believe it could reduce or eliminate many squabbles here. If people had a way to contact each other privately and apologise or clarify what they meant, I think they'd do so. I certainly would.

As it is, everything gets played out in public, and often seems to get a lot more heated than it needs to. Just my opinion.

Kissing Off Eastern Europe...

Quoting a U.S. source, the Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza says the Obama administration has decided against building a missile shield to protect Poland and the Czech Republic. The reason? Russian opposition.

Now, if we want to build a defense system for friends in Europe, we'll have to place it in the Balkans, Israel or somewhere else. That is, if Russia approves.

This is a stark reversal of past policy and reneges on promises made by the current administration. Worse, it shows weakness. We got into a staredown with the Russian bear and we blinked.

President Obama has vowed to support missile defense, provided it was "pragmatic and cost-effective." Well, the Congressional Budget Office rated the system going into Poland and the Czech Republic as the most effective of the alternatives.

As for promises to our allies, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton just this month said the U.S. would offer our allies a "defense umbrella" against threats from a possible Iranian nuclear weapon.

Now, all that high-sounding defense rhetoric is out the window.

...And Latin America As Well

Oh, one last thought about the PM system: there should be some automated sort of response the sender gets if they send a PM to someone who doesn't have it turned on. "this user has not enabled the PM function and cannot see your message" or something like that. Or some way to see if the person you want to contact has the function enabled.

Otherwise I can see fights breaking out: "Why are you ignoring my PMs?!?" kind of thing.

I am. I'm still wondering what is up with those inbeded links that look like ads, never mind the other innuendos.

Maybe after I go in bed and sober up I'll figure it out?

re: #265 Charles

The new reply and quote buttons are much more attractive against Charle's blue background, than the general grey, IMHO.
Hope that's not out of line!

The embedded ads are new, but some of us using Firefox with the correct add-ons don't see them.

Just imagine how frustrated Mrs Peacock is.

In Bed.

I'm still focussed on that portrait that is supposed to be Charles. Lousy picture. What the hell happened to the Grand Lizard?

Is that out of line?

Do you not mean incorrect add-ons? Is Charles' business model incorrect?

I dunno, but I'll bet it was in bed.

Makes me think of the TV series V. I think that's what it was called.

The inbeddeds exposed.

:0>

Can we have a vote on Charles going back to his well known and feared image?

Way ahead of you.

Burp.

64 degrees today, btw. Not your typical August day in Chitown.

re: #402 ryannon

It's ten pm. Do you know where your kids are?

Larry Clark:

"Ken Park"
"Kids"
"Bully"

Todd Solondz:
"Welcome to the Dollhouse"
"Palindromes"
"Storytelling"
"Happiness"

Not your usual Hollywood films.

Don't flame me, bro.

Love Larry Clark's work, painful as it was to see while raising two girls of my own. Love Todd Solondz, too, whose work keeps reminding me of my own awkward adolescence. Great adds to the discussion.

I just finished building the perfect loft for my daughter's new dorm-room, which I'm moving her into over the next couple of days. If you've ever raised any kids of your own, you know the kind of conflicted feelings I'm wrestling with tonight. My baby, my 18-yr-old little girl, is going to be living out from under my roof in a couple of days. Leaving her 16-yr-old sis, and my wife and I, and our loving 135 lb. Chessie behind.

It's all part of the continuum of life, and we all know it's the next step, but we've been an extraordinarily happy and "functional" family-unit along the way. My wife and I know this, because neither of us came from happy, functional families, though we've both mended fences with our families in the past few decades. You don't want to hold anyone back, and I don't think we could hold either of our two beautiful girls back if we tried, but we also have to figure out how we're going to handle this next phase of our lives.

Thanks for listening, if you did. ;)
